In the earlier seasons of the UK series Love Island, islanders’ family and friends were given control of their social media accounts. However, this practice has been altered in the more recent seasons.
Upon entering the villa, islanders are required to leave their cell phones behind. This ensures that they are not exposed to any spoilers or cast drama that may be watched by millions of viewers at home.
The single exception in this scenario is that the stars request their friends and family to manage their social media accounts while they are filming. This allows them to address any on-screen incidents and make amends for any conflicts on their behalf.
Another loophole involves completely disregarding the rule, as was the case with Season 10 contestant Ella Thomas who had a phone with her during filming because the driver allowed her to use it.
Despite this, social media regulations hold significant importance in the Love Island universe. It appears that the network is implementing modifications to these rules, which will be visible to viewers in the upcoming eleventh season.
On May 19, BBC Newsbeat reported that ITV had informed them exclusively that friends and family members of the islanders would not be allowed to use their social media platforms during the filming period.
As a result, whenever an islander causes a major commotion on-screen or online investigators delve into their history and uncover any controversies, they must patiently wait until they are eliminated and have access to their phone before addressing these issues publicly.
This rule is relatively recent, having only been implemented in Season 10 and part of Season 9. Despite not being in effect during the All-Stars premiere season, the network has decided to reintroduce it for Season 11.
Since the outlet did not mention any repercussions for those who try to violate this rule, we will have to discover them as we go along.
