The popular TV series “Lovely Runner”on tvN follows the journey of Im Sol (played by Kim Hye-yoon) as she travels back in time from 2023 to 2008 in order to save her favorite celebrity, Ryu Sun-jae (played by Byeon Woo-seok). The show has gained a large fanbase due to the thrilling romantic storyline between Kim Hye-yoon and Byeon Woo-seok.
Despite the positive reception for the romantic elements, some viewers have expressed dissatisfaction with the comedic aspects used in the drama’s development. In earlier episodes, there were scenes that viewers found embarrassing, such as involving underpants and menstrual symptoms. For instance, Im Sol’s friend Lee Hyun-joo (Seo Hye-won) accidentally defecated in front of Im Geum (Song Ji-ho), Im Sol (Kim Hye-yoon) had to urgently use the bathroom and got off the bus with Ryu Seon-jae (Byeon Woo-seok), and a door was opened while a senior who bullied Im Sol was using the restroom. The drama incorporated crude humor from the very beginning.
The humor in the show seemed forced from the beginning, with instances such as Sarang mistaking Gu Won for a sexual harasser in the hotel gym and an awkward encounter where Sarang accidentally runs into Gu Won while he is wiping away his sweat stains in the suite’s bathroom. Viewers also expressed criticism towards the inclusion of menstrual scenes in the first episode, finding the script to be strange.
While many crude humor scenes may be seen as unsuccessful, there are some that have stood the test of time. A prime example is the scene in MBC’s ‘High Kick Through The Roof’ (2009) where Shin Se-kyung delivers the line, “Student Junhyuk~ I found your panties!”This moment still remains memorable to this day.
Despite including frequent crude humor elements such as references to bodily functions, the sitcom successfully fulfilled its main purpose of entertaining viewers through laughter.
Despite the ongoing debate over whether humor or romance should be given more focus, viewers of “Lovely Runner” have made it clear that they want to see more natural and contextualized humor in the show. While scenes such as Im Sol’s accidental borrowing of an adult video may be amusing, they are only deemed acceptable if they contribute to the development of the main characters and their storylines.
Despite having only four episodes left until its finale, “Lovely Runner” continues to be closely examined. The drama’s ability to balance forced humor with satisfying romantic moments while retaining its charm remains a topic of interest.
