After Shanks entrusts him with his straw hat, Luffy embarks on a quest to return the hat and fulfill his dream of becoming the Pirate King of the Grand Line. He begins by assembling a skilled crew who pledge their unwavering allegiance to him.
When Ulti pressured Nami into stating that her captain, Luffy, would never become the Pirate King, Nami was not convinced. Ulti remained determined in her belief that Luffy will one day reach this prestigious title. As the fight between Zoro and King unfolded, it became a competition to prove which captain would claim the title of Pirate King. Zoro emerged victorious, confidently declaring that his captain will indeed become the Pirate King.
Luffy’s ultimate dream was to become the pirate king, and his crewmates were the ones who would help make it a reality. Along with this dream, Luffy also had another goal that he shared on two separate occasions.
Initially, during his childhood while residing with Dadan, Ace, and Sabo, Luffy’s companions declared themselves as the strongest pirates in the Grand Line. In contrast, Luffy asserted to have a different identity, one that Ace and Sabo found absurd. Similarly, during the last saga before the Straw Hats reached Egghead, Luffy revealed his ambition to his crew, receiving a similar response.
Interestingly, when Roger shared his dream with Oden and Whitebeard, the latter also dismissed the idea of becoming the Pirate King as absurd. This has led fans to speculate that Roger and Monkey D. Luffy may share the same dream. Additionally, Shanks revealed to Rayleigh that Luffy reminds him of their former captain.
Therefore, it is possible that Luffy’s journey is not only a means for him to achieve his destiny, but also for others who encounter him to recognize his potential as a formidable pirate. This notion is further supported by Zuniesha’s revelation after Luffy gained control over his devil fruit. If Luffy is indeed the prophesied JoyBoy of the current era, he would be the first pirate king to pass down the legendary One Piece for posterity, a secret that only the late Roger has uncovered.
Additionally, the Buccaneers bestowed upon Luffy the title of Sun God Nika, based on his devil fruit powers and personality. Nika held a significant role in their race, solidifying Luffy’s special status among them. Thus, the question remains: is Luffy’s path determined by his dream or his destiny?
Despite what fans may believe, both choices played a role in Luffy’s journey to become the Pirate King. He actively pursued his dream and fulfilled it, and in doing so, may have also been fulfilling a predestined path towards his destiny. This can be interpreted from a different viewpoint.
Despite continuously defeating strong pirates on his journey, Luffy remains unaware of his true destiny due to his intense focus on fulfilling his dream. Surprisingly, he is still unaware of the legendary power of the devil fruit he consumed, as he continues to use it as if it were just a regular Logia-type gun devil fruit, as evidenced by his attacks during the Egghead arc.
It is possible that this is why he has yet to falter. If he had recognized his fate as the future pirate king, he may have stopped giving his utmost effort. Therefore, Monkey D Luffy is not only achieving his dream in One Piece, but also shaping his destiny with every move he makes towards becoming the next Pirate King.
