The latest Sony State of Play showcased an array of surprises, with the most unexpected announcement being the Lunar Remastered Collection. Fans of the cherished JRPG series can rejoice as both Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete will be remastered for modern consoles. In an additional surprise, the Lunar Remastered Collection will be accessible on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Series X|S, and Steam, alongside PlayStation 4 and 5.
The Lunar series holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers, despite its somewhat tumultuous history. Originally launched in the early 1990s on the Sega CD in Japan, Lunar: The Silver Star along with its sequel Lunar: Eternal Blue, were later remade as Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete for the PlayStation, gaining English releases as well. Boasting a captivating 90s anime aesthetic, these titles have garnered a dedicated fanbase, although their spin-offs didn’t achieve the same level of acclaim.
Fans have been eagerly anticipating a revival of the series for over a decade—since 2009, to be exact, when Lunar: Silver Star Story received a remake for the PSP. Requesting a Lunar announcement during video game showcases has become akin to inquiring about Hollow Knight: Silksong in the realm of JRPGs. The Lunar Remastered Collection promises to be worth the wait with its brighter, and in some cases, redrawn graphics. Additionally, it enhances audio quality and introduces quality of life improvements such as faster battle speeds. Importantly, these updates apply to the PlayStation versions of the two Lunar titles, usually regarded as the definitive editions.
It’s also noteworthy that the Lunar Remastered Collection marks the first time Lunar 2: Eternal Blue has been remastered since its 2000 PlayStation port! The release of both Lunar 1 and Lunar 2 together in Spring 2025 is a thrilling prospect for both long-time fans of the original games and newcomers eager to explore these iconic JRPG classics. Moreover, this announcement allows us to proudly state that we have received a Lunar series remaster before Grand Theft Auto VI, a dream scenario for many fans.
