M. Night Shyamalan Explains His Lack of Familiarity with Trap Theories

Ever since the release of the first Trap trailer, fans have been eagerly speculating about what the twist might be. However, M. Night Shyamalan has neither confirmed nor denied any of their theories.

After Cole’s encounter with dead people in The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan has gained recognition for his signature rug pull endings.

Upon the release of the Trap trailer, fans were sent down a rabbit hole of speculation as the big twist was revealed – Cooper (Josh Hartnett) is the serial killer that the police have been searching for.

There are those who have suggested that it may be a double bluff (ourselves included), while others believe there may be a connection to Unbreakable, as seen in this Reddit discussion thread.

Despite Hartnett finding it enjoyable that people are interested in participating in this manner, he also shared that he avoids reading any online content or articles about himself.

Shyamalan clarified the reason behind it, stating, “Josh and I had discussed this matter. As artists who are in the public eye, there exists a delicate balance between our craft, which is the link to our art, and the incorporation of that art into society and its culture.”

“It is important to be cautious about this, as one may become more invested in the integration rather than the art form itself. In that case, the integration becomes the primary focus.”

He proceeded to clarify that when the emphasis shifts to acceptance or instant celebration, it becomes “extremely risky”because the “cycle then reverses.”

As you attempt to manipulate the system and achieve temporary success, you begin to lose a part of yourself. This goes against the essence of the art form.

Despite this, there is one individual who has been thoroughly enjoying the various theories: Jayalakshmi Shyamalan, the filmmaker’s mother.

“He continued, “Whenever I go to have tea or visit mom and dad, she always has something to tell me and she gets so excited.”

“My mother often starts off by saying, ‘Did you hear they believe…’ and then proceeds to explain the entire theory to me. However, I usually tell her, ‘Mom, I’d rather not listen to all of this.’ But she persists and asks, ‘Is it true?’ to which I respond, ‘I can’t reveal that, Mom. You’ll have to watch the movie yourself.’”

If you want to verify the validity of the theories, you can currently watch Trap in US cinemas. Additionally, there are new movies available for streaming this month and we also have information on the Until Dawn film, 28 Years Later, and Smile 2.
