M. Night Shyamalan reveals “absurd” real life inspiration behind Trap

The latest film from the director of The Sixth Sense is set at a concert featuring Lady Raven, a made-up pop star portrayed by his actual daughter, Saleka Shyamalan.

However, as the trailer unveiled, the true intention of the show is to serve as a trap set up by the FBI in order to apprehend a notorious serial killer known as “The Butcher.”

Josh Hartnett and Ariel Donoghue portray a father and daughter who become entangled in the plot in multiple ways.

The filmmaker explained that the movie went through several stages before reaching its final form. The last part of this process involved discussions between Saleka and the filmmaker about the desired format and other details.

After considering the possibility that there could be a killer inside, I recalled an event from my childhood in the 80s where the police and FBI had set up a sting operation at a public gathering.

Operation Flagship, also known as the case, was a sting operation launched by the authorities in 1985 with the aim of apprehending fugitives who were wanted for a range of crimes.

The plan included the distribution of invitations for a fabricated event, supposedly offering complimentary tickets to attend the Washington Redskins’ home game against the Cincinnati Bengals, as well as the opportunity to win a fully funded trip to Super Bowl XX.

Upon the arrival of the invitees at the designated location, the Washington Convention Center, law enforcement officers apprehended them, leading to the detainment of over 100 wanted fugitives.

Undercover officers posed as ushers, cheerleaders, and mascots

According to Shyamalan, the organizers invited all the criminals and every single one of them attended. There was a lively atmosphere with dancing, cheerleaders, mascots, and a band, and interestingly, all the attendees were dressed as police officers.

“Quite literally, they were all dressed in cheerleader outfits and dancing with them. Everyone was filled with excitement as they entered, but suddenly the doors were shut and the authorities announced, ‘You are all under arrest.’”

“The absurdity of the situation, where you were dancing with them just moments before your life was taken, has stayed with me as a remarkably peculiar and fascinating concept. It was this language that we decided to adopt and incorporate into our own.”

Trap will be released in US theaters on August 2 and in UK theaters on August 9. Additionally, be sure to also browse the list of new movies and TV shows coming to streaming platforms this month for even more exciting content.
