Magic: The Gathering has encountered a unique phase in recent months, with significant developments that are likely to shape the game’s trajectory for the foreseeable future.
The most noteworthy update is that the Universes Beyond series will now be recognized and allowed across all MTG formats, including Standard from now on. This marks a substantial shift from the previous approach of limiting releases under this banner to specific gameplay formats.
For those unfamiliar, Universes Beyond incorporates elements and intellectual properties from outside the MTG universe. In recent years, these expansions have expanded to encompass a variety of franchises, including Fallout and Lord of the Rings, the latter of which inspired the highly sought-after, one-of-a-kind One Ring card.
Additionally, the rollout of Foundations in November is a crucial element of Wizards of the Coast’s strategy, laying out a vision that extends to at least 2029. To align with their broad aspirations, only three Multiverse sets will be unveiled annually.
Overall, players can anticipate six Standard-legal sets coming soon, which consist of three Multiverse sets and three Universes Beyond releases.
Innistrad: Remastered (January 24)
The early 2010s saw a fascinating shift towards gothic themes in MTG that certainly featured some hidden gems. Innistrad: Remastered revitalizes this classic aesthetic with an exclusive Collector-booster “Headliner”card, showcasing a serialized movie poster of Edgar Markov.
Aetherdrift (February 14)
Aetherdrift merges the adrenaline-fueled motorcycle action reminiscent of Tron with the chaotic energy of Mad Max: Fury Road. If that doesn’t entice you to check out this TCG set, we’re not sure what will. With engaging themes surrounding the Aether Spark, Aetherdrift is deeply woven into the broader MTG lore.
Tarkir: Dragonstorm (April 11)
The return to the Tarkir plane is likely to be met with enthusiasm from the Magic community. The revival of beloved characters and fearsome creatures only adds to the excitement. With its clan-based gameplay dynamics and terrifying new dragon designs, this set should resonate well with traditional MTG fans.
Final Fantasy (June 13)
The Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set is anticipated to generate considerable buzz as its release approaches. Excitingly for dedicated fans, the collaboration between the two art teams promises to be more immersive than ever.
“Featuring a wide array of scenes from the franchise, players can expect artwork from Magic’s original artists alongside iconic illustrations from famed Final Fantasy creators, plus stunning new artwork crafted specifically for this release,” revealed head designer Mark Rosewater.
Edge of Eternities (August 1)
The theme of Edge of Eternities appears to be among the most compelling in recent memory. Taking players to the previously unexplored Solthera system, this set promises to expand MTG beyond its known multiverse. Tezzeret is making a long-awaited comeback, marking his first appearance since the Hour of Devastation set back in 2017.
Marvel’s Spider-Man (TBA 2025)
Previously announced at NYCC, the Spider-Man set will mark the first extensive crossover collaboration between Marvel and Wizards of the Coast. While a specific launch date hasn’t yet been confirmed, it is expected to release in the autumn of 2025, generating much excitement.
Secret Lair x SpongeBob SquarePants (TBA 2025)
In what could be the most amusing release planned, everyone’s favorite animated sponge will soon join the ranks of MTG in a Secret Lair crossover. While not many details or confirmed cards have been revealed yet, fans are eagerly hoping for the delightful inclusion of Handsome Squidward.
