Despite each game pushing boundaries in their own unique ways, the upcoming releases in the fighting game genre are all making waves. For instance, Street Fighter 6 will be the inaugural mainline entry to incorporate guest characters from external franchises, while Tekken 8 went against its executive producer’s wishes by resurrecting Heihachi. Not to be outdone, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is also breaking new ground by bringing back fan-favorite character Mai Shiranui, who will be sporting a new look with pants.
Mai Shiranui, a beloved character, made her debut in Fatal Fury 2. Although she did not appear in Garou: Mark of the Wolves, she did make a comeback in Fatal Fury 3. However, as the series went on a hiatus for more than 20 years, Mai became an essential part of The King of Fighters games, always wearing her signature red kunoichi outfit with minor changes. The latest trailer for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves not only confirms her return to the series but also reveals her new default look. For the first time, she will not be wearing her traditional red garb, instead opting for a sleek leather jacket, black pants, and high-heeled boots.
The preview also gives a glimpse of her iconic attire, although it does not confirm how it will be attainable. Currently, the only other known alternate outfit is Terry’s classic ensemble, which is featured as a preorder bonus DLC costume at the end of Mai’s reveal trailer.
Though it is uncertain if Mai’s iconic outfit will be available as DLC, one thing that is certain is the release date for City of the Wolves. The recently released gameplay trailer reveals that the game will be launched on April 24, 2025, alongside five additional characters that will be part of the Season Pass 1 DLC. The silhouettes shown in the trailer are nondescript, making it impossible to predict which characters will be featured in the DLC. However, we can confirm that Mai will not be one of them, as her return to Fatal Fury comes with a stylish new addition to her wardrobe.
