Major Change Made to Naoya’s Scene in Jujutsu Kaisen Sparks Fan Backlash

Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami had an alternate concept for one of Naoya’s beloved scenes, which has received negative feedback from fans in comparison to the original version.

The third season of Jujutsu Kaisen will feature the character Naoya Zenin, who is the youngest son of Naobito Zenin. From the moment he was born, he has displayed exceptional abilities and has been considered a prodigy. Growing up in the prestigious Zenin clan, Naoya was constantly praised and admired for his talents.

Despite growing up hearing adults speak negatively about Toji, Naoya never truly understood his own inferiority until he saw him in person. As someone born with a heavenly-restricted body, Toji lacked any trace of cursed energy or technique, making him a constant source of embarrassment according to the adults. However, being face-to-face with Toji allowed Naoya to see the stark contrast in their abilities.

According to a popular JJK account, the initial draft had Gege planning for Naoya to say, “The One who stands with Toji-kun is me!!”However, this was eventually altered to “The One who stands with them is me!!”

In the Perfect Preparation Arc, Naoya and Maki engage in a fight. Naoya is confident in his ability to emerge victorious and reach the pinnacle of jujutsu sorcery, just like Toji and Gojo. However, he was originally only supposed to mention Toji’s name.

The translation has him using the term “Toji-kun,”which is a semi-formal way of addressing a male, typically someone younger or of the same age as the speaker. However, since Naoya is younger than Toji, this form of address is not suitable. Gege altered the original concept and also included Gojo in the scene.

A fan expresses, “I have a belief that Gege considers most things unnecessary, so he alters them to something different.”

“Despite his constant boasting, he isn’t even considered one of the top 20 in the verse,”says another, referencing a tweet.

Another fan inquires, “Why does he refer to Toji as ‘Toji-kun?’ Based on our understanding, Toji was actually older than Naoya.”
