The conclusion of Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen left fans astonished in many ways, but one of the most astonishing moments was Mahito’s unexpected return. Prior to his shocking conversation with Ryomen Sukuna after the demise of the King of Curses, there were no indications that Mahito was still alive or held any significance in the story.
This resurgence in the storyline wasn’t simply a plot twist; it introduced some critical implications, particularly concerning the future of the beloved character Nobara Kugisaki, especially after the events of the series finale. While fans might not witness these developments, the suggestion that Nobara may not achieve a happy ending lingers in the air.
Mahito’s return in Jujutsu Kaisen implies he endures through his victims, including Nobara
The crucial implication arising from Mahito’s reappearance indicates that he may persist within the souls of his surviving victims. This is presumably due to the “residue” he leaves behind in individuals whose souls he has interacted with. Furthermore, his conversation with Sukuna can be traced back to Mahito’s interaction with Sukuna’s soul during the Vs. Mahito Arc, suggesting fragments of Mahito’s essence remain in those who were subjected to his Idle Transfiguration technique.
However, this element is likely relevant to only a select few, as most individuals affected by Mahito’s Cursed Technique were transformed into monstrous beings that ultimately perished. Although there’s a slim chance that some Transfigured Humans might still be alive and lurking in the shadows, it seems highly improbable. Consequently, the number of individuals impacted by Mahito’s unique abilities is quite limited.
The gravity of this fact is underscored by Mahito’s closing remarks in the series, where he claims to be the “only [one] left” among the prominent Cursed Spirits. This statement hints at his continued existence, despite being absorbed and utilized as a weapon by Kenjaku during the climactic moments of the Shibuya Incident Arc.
In this context, it’s noteworthy that Nobara Kugisaki stands out as the only individual among Mahito’s victims who has survived, retained her consciousness, and kept her body intact. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, Nobara possesses a Cursed Technique that has an influence over the souls of others, but unlike Mahito’s method, hers operates through her Cursed Energy’s touch rather than direct soul interaction.
Given her unique position as the sole survivor of Mahito’s victims with this specific trait, a possibility arises that she might become a vessel for him in a manner analogous to Yuji Itadori and Sukuna. Even if fragments of Mahito’s essence linger elsewhere as Sukuna’s fingers do, it is plausible that Nobara would harbor Mahito’s primary soul, mirroring how Yuji contains Sukuna’s essence. This scenario could be likened to the Cursed Womb Death Paintings, which were hybrids of humans and Cursed Spirits.
Moreover, if other aspects of Mahito’s soul do exist and he manages to compel Nobara into contact with them, he might even take control of her body. This situation echoes the dynamic between Yuji and Sukuna, where Sukuna was able to overpower Yuji once his soul’s strength reached a particular threshold.
The potential harmony between their Cursed Techniques and the likelihood of Mahito enhancing his powers would provide him ample motivation to pursue this course of action.
Concluding thoughts
As of now, all of this remains speculative. Nevertheless, should Akutami consider creating a subsequent series or penning one himself, these ideas could present a fascinating and captivating story angle to explore.
