Malcom in the Middle Reunion Ignoring One Original Cast Member

Fans of Malcolm in the Middle can finally rejoice as the beloved sitcom makes a comeback with a new series of episodes nearly two decades after its original run concluded. However, this highly anticipated reunion will not feature one key original cast member.

The series, which chronicled the unconventional life of the Wilkerson family, concluded its seventh season in 2006, wrapping up a total of 151 episodes over its six-year tenure. With its departure, many assumed the series had reached its end. Despite sporadic reunion speculations and cast get-togethers over the years, concrete plans never materialized—until December 2024, when Disney+ confirmed the production of new episodes.

The original cast is now gathering in Vancouver to bring to life four new episodes, set significantly later in the characters’ lives. While most of the familiar faces will return, one of the original stars will be absent.

Recasting Dewey: A Shift in the Reunion

Erik Per Sullivan, who portrayed Dewey, will not return for the revival. According to Variety, the 33-year-old actor has largely stepped away from the industry and has maintained a low profile since his childhood stardom.

Sullivan has not been on screen for over 15 years, with his last credited role in the 2010 film Twelve. His absence from numerous cast reunions over the years further underscores his withdrawal from acting.

This time around, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark is set to fill Dewey’s shoes, taking on the role for the series’ revival.

Aside from the change with Dewey, all the original cast members are confirmed to return. Frankie Muniz will reprise his iconic role, while Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek are returning as Hal and Lois, respectively. Additionally, Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield will step back into the roles of Francis and Reese.

Although Dewey will be part of the reunion, the character will be portrayed by a different actor.

Over the nearly two-decade gap, the Wilkerson family has also seen growth. Malcolm now has a new sibling, along with a partner and daughter of his own, bringing the family back together to celebrate Hal and Lois’s 40th wedding anniversary.

Filming for the reunion is expected to commence soon, with Muniz expressing excitement about reconnecting with his “old family, ”teasing fans about the upcoming episodes.
