Lucasfilm has just revealed a new Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu, directed by series showrunner Jon Favreau.
We can see a renewed interest from the studio in its slate of Star Wars productions on the big screen, after a hiatus of several years following The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.
Other films in development in a galaxy far, far away include projects led by James Mangold (Logan) and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Miss Marvel). Mangold’s film will explore the origins of the Jedi Order, while Obaid-Chinoy’s will follow the exploits of Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, after The Rise of Skywalker.
It is now a new opus which has been added to the list of projects for the big screen. And his team already has something to reassure fans of Mando, aka Din Djarin: it corresponds, roughly speaking, to that of the series which was unanimously acclaimed on Disney+< a i=2> and helped Star Wars prove that its universe was still as attractive to the greatest number of people.
Announcement of the film The Mandalorian & Grogu for dark rooms
In any case, The Mandalorian & Grogu will continue the story initiated in the Disney+ series, The Mandalorian.

“The Mandalorian and Grogu are heading to the big screen. Directed by Jon Favreau, produced by Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian & Grogu will begin production later this year. This is the Way.”
And what better than the showrunner of the successful series to lead the film to the right place? Because according to the announcement, it is Jon Favreau who will direct this brand new opus. And he won’t be alone: the production includesDave Filoni, one of the executive producers of The Mandalorian, who played a key role in its development.
A shock team for the film The Mandalorian & Grogu
According to the publication of the Star Wars website, Jon Favreau says he is excited about the idea of doing it again: “I have loved telling stories in the rich universe that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
As for Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, she also expressed her confidence in the two creators: “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have introduced two new and beloved characters to Star Wars, and this new story is perfectly suited to the big screen.”
No mention of Pedro Pascal is made in the publication. We therefore do not yet know if he will put the Mando armor back on: in the series, his performance was mainly vocal, but as the mask ends up falling, we could expect to see more of his features in the future.
Likewise, no information has been given on a release date for The Mandalorian & Grogu in cinemas. But the tweet indicates production “later this year,” and the post specifies that the film will be “at the top of Lucasfilm’s plans for feature film development.” We can therefore easily expect that production will come before that of Star Wars by James Mangold or Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
And given the popularity of the series, we can understand that Mando has become Disney’s priority, just to succeed in the return of the distant galaxy at the cinema. The path to theaters is therefore clear for The Mandalorian & Grogu.
