MANGA Plus to begin simultaneous releases of all Shonen Jump+ app one-shot manga

On Saturday, August 31, 2024, Shueisha’s MANGA Plus service officially announced its plan to release all of the one-shot mangas from the Shonen Jump+ app simultaneously in English. The first manga to be released in this process is The Deep Sea of Words by author and illustrator MUGISUKE, which is now available in English on the platform.

The one-shots will be accessible for free on the platform for the initial 90 days after their release, and will later be included in the MANGA Plus MAX Deluxe subscriber plan. However, Shueisha has announced that there may be certain limitations to availability, indicating that there is a chance that some one-shots may not be released at the same time.

Shueisha’s New Direction with MANGA Plus: Providing Up-and-Coming Mangaka with a Better Chance to Succeed

Shueisha and MANGA Plus clarified that while the above information is exciting, there may be certain exceptions for one-shots. These exceptions may be due to the author’s wishes or the judgment of the editorial department. Shueisha also stated that there is no specific schedule for new one-shots, but readers can generally expect them to be released on a weekly basis.

The announcement is important for both readers and manga artists due to the increased accessibility of one-shots. These self-contained stories, typically spanning only one chapter, are often used to introduce new and emerging artists. If well-received, some one-shots may even be developed into full series, as seen with popular examples such as Death Note, Gintama, Bleach, and Naruto.

In recent years, the Shonen Jump+ app has consistently released more than 200 one-shots. A standout among these has been Chainsaw Man mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back, which was adapted into an anime film project. Despite Fujimoto’s established reputation as a mangaka, this achievement highlights the importance of the one-shot format and its accessibility for aspiring artists.

Shueisha’s decision to make this move is a clever one, as it helps to promote the growth of official English sources for recently published manga. This is particularly important in a time when the popularity of anime and manga is constantly increasing in the Western world, breaking away from the previous regional limitations that have been prevalent in the 21st century.

In September 2014, Shueisha introduced their Shonen Jump+ app service as a digital platform for free manga. The app also provided subscription options for complete series, as opposed to only select portions. In January 2019, Shueisha expanded their services with the global launch of MANGA Plus, which includes a free version and various subscription options tailored to the user’s preferences.
