During a recent stream featuring prominent figures like Austinshow, Valkyrae, Pokimane, Sykkuno, and Hank Green, billionaire Mark Cuban disclosed his role in assisting Justin Kan in the development of Twitch.
Justin Kan launched JustinTV back in 2007, showcasing a continuous live feed of his daily life through a head-mounted webcam.
Approximately eight months later, the platform was enhanced to allow others to broadcast as well, amassing over 30 million unique visitors each month. In 2014, JustinTV was phased out to pave the way for its successor, Twitch.
In a conversation with top Twitch personalities Austinshow, Pokimane, Sykkuno, and YouTube stars Hank Green and Valkyrae, Cuban explained his integral role in the inception of JustinTV and Twitch.
“Prior to JustinTV, I founded a company called AudioNet, which evolved into Broadcast.com, recognized as the first-ever streaming service,” he revealed. “Then a guy named Justin approached me, inquiring about streaming. That discussion ultimately led to the creation of JustinTV, which evolved into Twitch,” he added.
The stream participants were astonished by this backstory. Austinshow remarked, “Wow, so you’ve been aware of streaming for a long time.”
To which Cuban humorously responded, “Oh yes, I go way back… much further than any of you were even born.”
Cuban discussed additional topics during the stream. Pokimane inquired about a $200,000 bid made to play games with her at CDawgVA’s charity auction, attributed to someone named Mark Cuban.
“That wasn’t me,” he clarified to Pokimane. “I would have spent any sum necessary. You can tell it wasn’t me, given that the bid was not high enough.”
With a staggering net worth estimated at $5.7 billion, Cuban’s claim that he would pay any amount seems quite feasible. His notable investments over the years include the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and even the entire town of Mustang, Texas.
