Lumon’s primary objective centered around Gemma succeeding in the Cold Harbor test; however, the finale of Severance Season 2 introduces an unexpected twist: Mark S.emerges as the unlikely candidate fulfilling Kier Eagan’s “grand agendum.”Spoilers ahead…
Cold Harbor has been shrouded in mystery until this point. While we knew it represented Mark’s last MDR file and was Gemma’s final room, it was clear that once the process concluded, Gemma would “die.”
In the climactic moments of the Severance Season 2 finale, Mark successfully completes the file, elevating him to the status of “one of the most important people in history, ” as stated by the robotic Kier. Gemma enters Cold Harbor adorned in the outfit she wore on the day of her tragic loss, tasked with disassembling a baby crib—a poignant reminder of the child Mark had purchased for her prior to her miscarriage.
Interestingly, despite the deep emotional trauma associated with this scene, the version of Gemma inhabiting Cold Harbor is devoid of any pain. Dr. Mauer observes, “The barrier is holding. She feels nothing… it’s beautiful.” But the focus soon shifts back to Mark.
Mark’s Triumph in the Severance Season 2 Finale

Even though Gemma serves as the subject of the test, it is ultimately Mark who triumphs by choosing Helly at the conclusion of Severance Season 2 Episode 10.
As his Outie activates upon arrival at the testing floor, Mark breaks Gemma free from the Cold Harbor room just before she completes her task. Their reunion culminates in a kiss in the elevator as they ascend to the severed floor, which subsequently activates their Innies.
Mark’s Innie manages to guide Ms. Casey to safety in the stairwell, prompting her transformation back into Gemma. However, upon preparing to leave, he encounters Helly at the opposite end of the hall.
Despite Gemma’s desperate pleas—screaming, crying, and imploring him to escape with her—Mark makes the pivotal decision to remain with Helly, leading them both into an uncertain future. In this pivotal moment, Lumon’s experiment is validated, albeit without Jame Eagan’s understanding of its significance.
Mark, who once led a life overshadowed by grief, experiences an absence of pain or hesitation regarding his past with Gemma. Driven solely by the instinct to advance with Helly, he symbolizes a profound transformation.
A Reddit user pointed out the importance of this moment, noting, “Cold Harbor was about testing whether the barrier could hold and a severed person not feel anything their Outie would have felt.” They commented, “It was iMark passing that test, feeling nothing for Gemma at the stairwell door in the end.”

Another viewer suggested, “This indicates that Mark may have been evolving more than he refined Gemma. Speculation for the next 18 months begins.”
Moreover, the finale also highlights Gemma’s instinctive recognition of Mark as a source of safety when he rescues her from Cold Harbor. One viewer noted, “During a wellness session in Season 1, Ms. Casey mentioned how she always felt comfortable around Mark, ” implying a deeper connection.
In contrast, Mark never exhibited similar feelings toward Ms. Casey during their wellness sessions. The warmth of familiarity he shares with other characters, such as Burt and Irv, doesn’t seem to extend to her. However, in Cold Harbor, Gemma instinctively deduces Mark’s safety after only a few moments together.
Nevertheless, opinions diverge on this subject. One user commented, “I believe Innie Mark likely harbored some feelings for Gemma towards the end, but his bond with Helly was significantly stronger.”
Severance Seasons 1 and 2 are currently available for streaming on Apple TV+ for those eager to dive deeper into the narratives and emotional complexities.
