Marvel’s CEO Kevin Feige is optimistic that the studio’s newfound “underdog”reputation among audiences will provide them with the opportunity to redeem themselves for past disappointments.
Despite a slight decline in popularity among some fans, Marvel is determined to use this as a chance to reclaim its position at the top of the box office. Kevin Feige, the studio’s head, is optimistic about their ability to bounce back from recent failures.
In a recent interview with Empire, the CEO openly discussed his high expectations for the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine film, which is currently scheduled as the sole Marvel release in 2024.
Feige expressed his satisfaction with focusing on a single feature project this year, stating, “I always thrive as the underdog. Surpassing expectations and surprising audiences is my preference. Despite the challenges of the past year, it has prepared us well for this approach.”
Feige is discussing The Marvels, set to release in 2023, which is currently the least successful film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ranking below Ant-Man: Quantumania.
Ever since Avengers: Endgame concluded Phase 1 to 3 in 2019, the MCU has continuously produced a plethora of content through both movies and TV shows.
Despite the success of projects such as WandaVision and Loki, the movie branch of the studio has faced some criticism from the public.
Despite its continuous growth and being one of Marvel’s biggest challenges, the trend of “superhero fatigue”is not helping with certain audiences.
Despite differing opinions, Feige and Louis D’Esposito, Co-President of Marvel Studios, agree that Deadpool & Wolverine have the potential to help the studio regain the public’s approval.
“It has been a challenging period. According to D’Esposito, it would have been the worst outcome if we had simply maintained our success. However, we faced some setbacks and are now bouncing back stronger. It is possible that doing too much can lead to a diluted outcome. Therefore, we have learned our lesson and will limit ourselves to releasing two to three films and one or two shows per year instead of four of each.”
As stated by director Shawn Levy, the Marvel executives are not the only ones who are confident that Deadpool will bring back the excitement to the studio. Levy stated, “One would have to be unaware of recent events in the film industry to not notice the lack of success of recent Marvel movies. Our film comes at a critical moment, and it offers something unique. Only time will tell if it will have a significant impact.”
The debut of Deadpool and Wolverine marks the beginning of Marvel’s strategy to limit the number of TV shows and movies released each year for audiences. Hopefully, the premiere will meet and exceed the studio’s expectations.
On July 26, Deadpool and Wolverine will make their way to theaters. Fans can watch the movie’s trailer to discover all the hidden Easter eggs, get to know the main villain, and understand why there is uproar over Wolverine’s costume.
