If you happen to be a fan of the MCU, we regret to inform you that Marvel is reducing its production of movies and TV shows, as stated by Disney CEO Bob Iger.
In the past, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a unique concept. At the time, only The Avengers was released in 2012 as part of the franchise – but it quickly gained popularity and became a cultural phenomenon.
In the span of three years (2017-2019), a total of nine films were released, with three being released each year. However, the launch of Disney Plus by Kevin Feige in 2021 marked a significant increase in production, with a total of 22 projects being released (10 movies and 12 TV shows).
During Disney’s recent Q2 earnings call, Iger announced a shift in the company’s strategy to move away from their previous goal of increasing volume.
“He added that he and the studio have been diligently working to decrease output and place a stronger emphasis on quality, especially in regards to Marvel projects.”
“We will gradually decrease our volume, aiming to produce only two TV series per year instead of the previous four. Additionally, we plan to reduce our film output from four per year to a maximum of three or possibly two.”
“We are currently putting in a lot of effort to determine our future direction. We have some promising films lined up for 2025, and are eagerly looking forward to our next two projects, [Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars].”
“I am extremely pleased with the slate as a whole. It is a project that I have devoted increasing amounts of time to. I have complete faith in the team behind it and the intellectual property we are developing, which includes a lineup of highly anticipated sequels.”
Despite exceptions such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 and Loki Season 2, the year 2023 was historically bad for the MCU. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania did not meet expectations, Secret Invasion was poorly received as the worst TV show in the franchise, and The Marvels became the biggest flop in MCU history.
The big screen will see the return of Deadpool and Wolverine in the MCU.
