Marvel Comic That Inspired Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom is Now Unaffordable

If you want to purchase one of the comics that influenced Robert Downey Jr.’s comeback as Doctor Doom in the MCU, you may have to spend a significant amount of money.

RDJ’s comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe caused a frenzy in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. There have been ongoing speculations about Downey’s potential return, but it came as a surprise to fans when it was announced that he would be portraying Doctor Doom, the archenemy of the Fantastic Four.

The idea may seem strange, but it originated from various comics, with the most prominent being the Infamous Iron Man series. After the events of Secret Wars in 2015, Doctor Doom took over the mantle following Tony Stark’s passing. The series featured him facing off against formidable foes such as The Thing and Mephisto.

Despite its short run that concluded in 2017, Infamous Iron Man has experienced a surge in popularity, evident in the skyrocketing prices of Infamous Iron Man #1 on the secondary market. Previously listed on eBay for $20-$40, the comic is now being sold for anywhere between $60 and $200, with some CGC-graded copies reaching as high as $350.

Eager sellers have been quickly raising the price on Infamous Iron Man #1.

This is a common occurrence when a character gains popularity, particularly if they were recently featured in a reasonably priced comic. While comics no longer hold the same value as they did during the 1990s craze, there is still a strong collector’s market driven by passionate fans hoping to obtain the next Action Comics #1.

It’s not limited to just comics, as a user on Reddit recently expressed their disappointment after purchasing a long out-of-print Marvel Legends Infamous Iron Man figure just hours before the announcement, only to have their order cancelled. To their dismay, the seller relisted the item at twice the original price.

Thankfully, this is only a major concern for those who are new to the fandom and prefer physical copies. The entire Infamous Iron Man series can be found digitally on Marvel’s website and is also available for subscription through their service, Marvel Unlimited.

Regarding Downey Jr’s portrayal of Doom, there is limited information available about his character and his connection to the MCU’s Tony Stark. However, when Avengers: Doomsday is released in 2026, we can expect to learn more about his role.

Additionally, you can find out about the upcoming releases of both Fantastic Four and Captain America 4, and get all the necessary information.
