Some Marvel fans are in disagreement about the potential return of Tony Stark to the MCU, following hints from Robert Downey Jr. that it may occur in the future.
Robert Downey Jr. is widely recognized as the catalyst for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as his initial Iron Man film launched both the Infinity Saga and the entire universe.
Iron Man’s debut in 2008 marked the beginning of Downey’s portrayal as the beloved character. However, it was only 11 years later that his journey as Iron Man reached its conclusion in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, in which he heroically sacrificed himself while defeating Thanos.
The passing of this character was a highly emotional moment in the MCU, with fans having to bid farewell to someone they had become deeply attached to over the course of more than a decade.
When asked about the possibility of returning to the MCU, Downey shocked everyone by stating in an interview with Esquire that he would gladly do so. He explained that the role of Iron Man is deeply ingrained in his DNA and that he believes in never betting against Kevin Feige, as he is always the one who comes out on top.
It didn’t take long for Marvel fans to express their thoughts on social media, revealing a noticeable split in their opinions about Downey’s return.
There was great excitement over the announcement of Iron Man’s return to the big screen, with one fan tweeting, “He won an Oscar and declared that there was nothing left for him to prove. Time to slap that arc reactor back on!”
Despite some fans expressing skepticism, others were doubtful about Tony’s potential return as it would undermine the impactful ending of Endgame. As one fan stated on Twitter, “I may be in the minority, but I really hope he doesn’t come back. Bringing him back would just be cheap fan service, and his ending in Endgame was already perfect.”
There was also a small group of fans who humorously commented that they may not be able to handle Downey’s return as it would likely result in his death once more.
Currently, there is no confirmed method for Tony’s return, however, numerous MCU enthusiasts speculate that he may reappear in Avengers: Secret Wars due to its connection to the multiverse. It is possible that Tony could come back as an alternate version of himself.
