Marvel Rivals: Doctor Strange Update Addresses Team-Kill Exploit

The recent update for Marvel Rivals has introduced a significant tweak aimed at correcting a gameplay exploit involving Doctor Strange. This update addresses a frustrating issue where the Sorcerer Supreme could accumulate Ultimate charge through the elimination of teammates, albeit at a temporary cost to his gameplay mechanics.

Understanding the Exploit

Marvel Rivals features a rich assortment of characters drawn from Marvel Comics, and the gaming community has quickly identified the meta among heroes and villains. Among these, characters like Jeff the Land Shark and Venom boast formidable abilities; however, Doctor Strange has remained overpowered since release.

Following the game’s launch, players uncovered a tactical exploit: Doctor Strange could use his portal abilities to send allies off the map, which in turn allowed him to generate Ultimate meter rapidly. This mechanic enabled him to employ his powerful Ultimate ability, the Eye of Agamoto, with unwarranted frequency.

Impact on Gameplay

Typically, a character’s Ultimate meter should only charge when dealing damage to enemies or providing healing to allies. The capacity for Doctor Strange to gain charge by causing teammates to perish was significantly disrupting the balance of matches.

The December 10 Update

In response to player feedback, developers rolled out a patch on December 10 that aims to rectify this exploit. However, the solution is described more as a temporary fix rather than a comprehensive solution. According to the patch notes, “when Doctor Strange’s portals triggered terrain KOs, they would mistakenly restore Doctor Strange’s Ultimate energy.” Consequently, the development team has adjusted the mechanics: “for now, we have disabled the portals’ terrain KO attribution to temporarily fix this issue (i.e., terrain KOs will not count toward Doctor Strange’s own KOs).”

This change implies that Doctor Strange will no longer benefit from using his portals to secure kills—even against enemies. While this fix eliminates the possibility of team kills, players will also forfeit the ability to earn credit for cleverly maneuvering foes into the portals.

Future Updates and Alternatives

The developers reassured fans that terrain KOs will return in a future update, stating: “rest assured, this bug will be resolved in a future update, at which time we will restore the portals’ KO attribution.” However, a specific timeline for this update has yet to be communicated.

In the interim, players seeking alternatives can explore other Vanguard characters, such as Peni Parker and Hulk, to diversify their gameplay experience while the fix remains in place.
