Ahead of the premiere of The Penguin on September 19, the director of The Batman is already considering the next spinoff series in his DC universe.
Following the success of his 2022 film, the development of a spinoff series centered on one of Gotham’s most notorious supervillains, the Penguin, was accelerated.
Although the HBO series has yet to be released, Matt Reeves, along with executive producer Dylan Clark, has revealed they are already working on another spinoff show.
In an interview with The Direct, Reeves discussed the previously mentioned but reportedly abandoned Arkham Asylum series. When questioned about whether the new character Sofia Falcone from The Penguin was inspired by elements from the Arkham series, Reeves clarified that the two concepts are completely independent.
“Her ideas and the story elements that relate to [Sofia Falcone], those are all new ideas for her and have nothing to do with the other series that we’re continuing to do,” he said.
Though the specifics of the “other series” remain unconfirmed, several possibilities emerge.
For instance, it’s possible that the Arkham Asylum series is still in development. This spinoff was initiated after plans for a Gotham PD-focused show were shelved, although Variety reported in July 2024 that the Arkham project was tabled as well.
In another roundtable interview, Reeves acknowledged that the idea of a Harvey Dent-centric legal drama was among the topics being discussed.
A series centered on Harvey Dent/Two-Face would continue the trend of focusing on Batman’s adversaries rather than other key figures in Gotham.
The Penguin is set to premiere on HBO starting September 19, 2024.
