McDonald’s Closes 50% of Its Spin-off Restaurant Chains After One Year

After a year of operations, McDonald’s has decided to close three of its CosMc’s locations. However, the fast-food giant is optimistic about future openings that will better cater to customer preferences.

Launched in December 2023, the CosMc’s concept debuted with seven restaurants across the United States, predominantly in Texas, with a sole location in Illinois. Designed to be more expansive than traditional McDonald’s outlets, CosMc’s offered a unique menu featuring specialty coffees, delightful small bites, and a variety of innovative McFlurry flavors.

The inspiration for CosMc’s comes from the whimsical character CosMc, an orange extraterrestrial donned in an astronaut suit, aimed at engaging a younger demographic and enhancing the dining experience.

McDonald’s is set to launch new CosMc’s locations designed to align more closely with customer interests.

Future Plans for CosMc’s: New Locations on the Horizon

Despite closing half of its CosMc’s restaurants, McDonald’s has indicated intentions to open two additional locations in Texas, this time opting for a smaller building format. “As a result, we will open two new smaller format stores in Texas,” the company stated.

Interestingly, the decision to close certain locations was not a reflection of underperformance. Upon their initial opening, the CosMc’s restaurants drew significant crowds, with eager customers queuing for nearly five hours at times.

In fact, the Illinois location experienced such overwhelming demand that a military-style organization system was implemented to manage the influx of cars waiting in line. This enthusiasm is not surprising, as McDonald’s remains one of the most prominent fast-food chains globally.

Furthermore, McDonald’s has developed a strong enough following that many customers have taken to recreating their favorite menu items at home, highlighting the brand’s cultural impact.
