McDonald’s Customers Go Crazy for This 80s-Inspired Restaurant

McDonald’s is currently commemorating their 50th anniversary in the UK, prompting feelings of nostalgia as people are reminiscing over what the chain looked like in the 1980s.

Over the past five decades, there have been significant changes within the chain since its initial opening in Woolwich, South London, in October 1974.

The official McDonald’s UK account released a clip on TikTok showcasing a virtual tour of an old-school ‘Maccies.’ This was done to give viewers a glimpse of what it was like to order food from the iconic brand in the 1980’s.

During the tour, we are able to witness some of the chain’s original staples that were present during its early stages of popularity.

The super retro furniture and old school menu were displayed, and to our surprise, the menu featured many of the same items that are still available today, such as the Fillet O’ Fish.

The exhibit also included a traditional cash register, which was much larger in size compared to the modern digital versions commonly used today. Additionally, the chairs on display were more playful in design, resembling a massive burger, unlike the more standard chairs seen nowadays.

The store even had a designated area known as the “hottest hangout space in town” – the children’s section where one could book a birthday party location.

Towards the end of the clip, we are briefly shown the employee of the month wall, which recognized workers for their positive conduct by displaying a plaque in their name.

“One comment requested the return of the larger Big Mac size from the 90s, as well as the use of polystyrene boxes and old-style milkshakes.”

“One person added that everything should be changed back to when it was great, including the burger chairs, parties, and the best happy meal toys.”

The existence of the establishment in the video begs the question: why was it created? McDonald’s UK provided an explanation, stating that the establishment is part of their nostalgic 80s-themed advertising campaign. They also mentioned that the proceeds from the Birthday Cake Donut will be donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities UK, which is also commemorating its 35th anniversary this year.

In addition to the renovation, McDonald’s also released a birthday-inspired menu featuring the McCrispy BBQ Smokehouse, Cheesy Garlic Bread Dippers, Double Big Mac, Birthday Cake Donut, Milkybar Raspberry Ripple McFlurry (a blend of white chocolate and raspberry), and Munchies Cookie Dough McFlurry.
