We all recognize that hamburgers are among the top sellers at McDonald’s, but the actual volume of burgers sold at the fast-food giant each day is truly astonishing.
According to a study published by The Takeout, a website dedicated to food and beverage insights, McDonald’s sold nearly 6.5 billion burgers in 2021.
When we break it down to daily sales, McDonald’s serves an incredible 6.48 million burgers per day.
To give you a clearer picture, this translates to around 75 hamburgers sold every second worldwide. There’s even a dedicated platform for monitoring McDonald’s sales in real time, where you can observe the popularity of different menu items instantaneously.
This means the chain offers an astonishing total of 2.36 billion burger patties globally throughout a single year.
Despite these impressive figures, hamburgers aren’t the most sought-after menu items. McDonald’s French fries hold the title for highest consumer demand, with around 9 million pounds of fries sold daily.
The fries at McDonald’s consistently remain the top-selling item each year.
Another item surpassing the classic hamburger in popularity is the chain’s beloved chicken nuggets. During July’s WSJ Global Food Forum, Joe Erlinger, President of McDonald’s US, disclosed that chicken has become an increasingly popular choice among consumers.
“People’s eating habits change gradually,” he stated. “Yes, we are observing those gradual shifts. I believe part of this trend is related to affordability… chicken is less expensive to produce, making it a great value for consumers seeking budget-friendly options.”
“We need to closely monitor this shift in protein consumption,” he continued. “We’ve noted this change. When we started our brand in 1955, chicken sandwiches weren’t on our menu. Today, we sell more chicken than beef.”
This statement holds true, as the chain sells 34 million chicken nuggets daily, according to a study from 2017. Given their rising popularity in recent times, it’s likely this number has increased since then.
