A McDonald’s employee has gained significant attention online after sharing a common habit among drive-thru customers that can frustrate their servers.
The fast food worker, who is known as “maccaworkaddict” on TikTok, was seen dancing with a caption stating, “You can’t keep ignoring the car in the drive-thru because they screamed hello as soon as they get there.”
This behavior can be bothersome for McDonald’s drive-thru staff because each time a new customer arrives at the kiosk, the employee automatically receives a buzzing notification through the intercom indicating someone is ready to place an order. Therefore, saying ‘hello’ is unnecessary to signal their arrival.
Fast food workers say this one word is a no-go
Many other drive-thru employees echoed the sentiments of the TikTok user, with one Burger King staff member mentioning that customers often “start yelling” the moment she “put the headset on.”
Another worker joked, “Each time they say hello I make them wait another 10 seconds lol.”
Maccaworkaddict later clarified in the comments that the video should be taken lightly, emphasizing it was “just a joke.”
She also noted that it is perfectly acceptable for customers to say “hello” at the drive-thru if they have pulled up and no one has acknowledged them or is ready to take their order.
Following the viral success of her video, Maccaworkaddict has since deleted her TikTok account.
McDonald’s drive-thrus have been a trending topic throughout 2024. In June, the fast food giant announced the closure of over 100 AI-driven drive-thrus that had been introduced in 2021.
A spokesperson for McDonald’s commented that decisions regarding automated ordering systems will be made by the end of this year, but reassured that “a voice-ordering solution for drive-thru will be part of our restaurants’ future.”
