Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ 2 to Depict Jesus in Hell as Sequel Approaches Production

The upcoming film, The Passion of the Christ 2, is gearing up to commence production in 2025. This highly anticipated sequel, directed by Mel Gibson, aims to delve into the profound narrative of Jesus’ resurrection and his brief journey through Hell.

Remarkably, Jim Caviezel is set to reprise his iconic role as Jesus. Over two decades since Gibson shattered box office records with the original, The Passion of the Christ—which became America’s highest-grossing R-rated film of all time until the release of Deadpool and Wolverine—this long-awaited sequel is officially moving forward.

The first film delivered on its promise, showcasing the agonizing final day of Jesus before his crucifixion. The last scenes depicted his resurrection as he emerged from the tomb, yet the sequel will explore the events that transpired between his crucifixion and this resurrection moment.

According to Italpress, Gibson has been actively “scouting for locations” to film The Passion of the Christ 2, with production expected to take place in Israel, Morocco, and Italy starting in 2025. Caviezel is anticipated to return as Jesus, a role that significantly impacted his Hollywood career (notably, he was even struck by lightning during filming).

The sequel appears set to explore Christ’s descent into Hell following his crucifixion, leading up to his resurrection. During a prior appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Gibson elaborated: “It’s more than a single event; it’s an amazing event – and to underpin that with the things around it is really the story.”

“It’s not merely about the event; it’s not just a chronological recounting of that singular moment, which could become mundane. The question is: what are the surrounding events that transpire?”

When asked by Colbert about potential antagonists, Gibson hinted: “There are… they’re in another realm.”

In 2023, the director shared that he has been collaborating with co-writer Randall Wallace on two different scripts. “One of them is well-structured and robust, while the other feels like an acid trip,” he teased. “You dive into other realms. You’re in Hell witnessing angels fall. It’s quite surreal.”
