In recent years, K-pop’s influence has grown significantly as many artists have found success in the international market. However, with this success, there has also been an increase in what is known as “skill gaps”within the industry. This issue was highlighted at Coachella 2024, where HYBE’s girl group, LE SSERAFIM, faced backlash from Koreans for their subpar live singing. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident, as many new-generation idols have been criticized for their lack of vocal abilities, becoming a major concern in the K-pop industry.
Tiffany made an appearance on a reality show where she shared her thoughts on the current generation of idols. She expressed surprise at the lack of diligence among some new idols, stating, “I don’t want to come across as arrogant, but I am taken aback by the indifferent attitude of some new-generation idols.”She also mentioned her recent attendance at a music show, which was for SNSD’s 15th-anniversary project. She reflected on the dedication and hard work they put into their performances back then, in contrast to the present.
With the rise of individual fancams and ‘one-shot’ recordings, it seems that some idols may not be putting in as much effort during their stage performances. This raised the question in my mind, “Why do some idols seem to lack motivation nowadays?”It is important for one to always remain passionate and dedicated to their work, even during soundchecks.
Tiffany’s statement quickly ignited a flurry of discussion. Numerous individuals concurred with her, expressing their disappointment in certain groups that are lacking in abilities and constantly face criticism without showing improvement. Fans confidently affirmed that, being a member of the national girl group, Tiffany is well-equipped to offer her opinions on the current generation of idols.
Despite Tiffany’s remarks being perceived as overly generalizing by some, it should be acknowledged that while many idols may lack enthusiasm, there is still a significant number who work tirelessly and wholeheartedly towards achieving success. The minority of lazy and unprofessional individuals face severe criticism from the public.
Every group of idols has their overachievers and underperformers. Tiffany’s statement about the lack of diligence among newer idols seemed to paint them all with the same brush, disregarding the dedication of those who work hard. While Tiffany emphasized her own passion for work, even during soundchecks, online users noted various occasions where members of Girls’ Generation were not always fully committed.
Despite Tiffany’s intentions, her words came across as overly preachy and may have given the impression that she was trying to assert her superiority. A more effective approach would have been for a senior artist to offer simple advice without making harsh comments or generalizations about an entire generation of diverse idols.
