Mexican Pop Group ‘Jeans’ Sends Supportive Message to NewJeans & Proposes Collaboration

On May 25th, the members of Jeans, Angie Taddei, Melissa López, and Regina Murguía, shared a TikTok video expressing their surprise at the resurgence of the beautiful 1990s concept in Korea. They also sent their love and congratulations to NewJeans.

The group expressed their admiration, saying, “It’s impressive how you incorporate elements from the 1990s into your work. We would love it if you reached out to us so that we could collaborate together.”

JNS, formerly known as Mexican group Jeans, made their debut in 1996 and promoted until 2008. In 2015, they changed their name and have since been active under the new name. They continue to be active as JNS to this day.

The recent surge of interest in Jeans can be attributed to allegations made by netizens that the Korean girl group NewJeans may have plagiarized their name and overall concept from Jeans. This suspicion is supported by evidence such as similar logo fonts, vibes, choreographies and outfits between the two groups.

Despite the plagiarism claims, fans have strongly denied them. They pointed out that Jeans was popular in the 1990s, while NewJeans draws inspiration from both contemporary and Y2K eras, with a main concept of retro culture. Additionally, when NewJeans first debuted, they incorporated popular fonts, images, and elements from early 2000s mobile phone screens. Furthermore, their communication app, Phoning, maintains a retro concept similar to messaging apps from the 2000s.

As the newtro (new+retro) trend continues to gain popularity in fashion and pop culture, NewJeans’s strategy has proven to be successful. This promotional approach has garnered enthusiastic reactions from individuals of all ages, including both older generations and teenagers and people in their 20s of this era.

In the midst of plagiarism accusations against NewJeans, Jeans showed support for the revival of the 1990s concept and suggested a possible collaboration between the two brands.

NewJeans recently made their highly anticipated comeback on May 24th. Their double title track “How Sweet” immediately gained massive success, selling 811,843 copies on its release day and claiming the top spot on the daily album charts. It is expected that NewJeans will achieve their fourth consecutive million-copy record in the near future.

“In addition to its success on domestic music charts, “How Sweet”is also performing strongly on international charts and has accumulated millions of views on its music video. The girl group is scheduled to make an appearance on SBS’s “Inkigayo”on May 26th, where they will continue promoting their comeback track.”
