Paty Sirvent recently posted a photo on her SNS account comparing Jeans and NewJeans, expressing her love for the latter by saying “Love it (me encanta)”. In another post, she accused NewJeans of plagiarizing Jeans and added the caption “We’re not so wrong (No estábamos tan equivocados)”.
Ever since last month, there has been a ongoing conflict between HYBE and ADOR’s CEO Min Hee-jin. HYBE has accused Min Hee-jin of trying to gain control of ADOR, while Min Hee-jin has denied these claims and instead accused ILLIT, the new girl group from HYBE’s subsidiary label Belift Lab, of plagiarizing NewJeans.
During the controversy, internet users highlighted proof that NewJeans had plagiarized the Mexican girl group Jeans.
Last year, an article published by Mexican media outlet El Sigol sparked a sudden surge in interest. The article highlighted similarities between the two groups, noting similarities in their costumes and visual concepts. They stated that there were claims circulating online that South Korean girl group NewJeans had drawn inspiration from Mexican girl group Jeans in the 90s.
Consequently, heated discussions emerged in Korean online communities regarding the accusation of NewJeans plagiarizing Jeans. Certain netizens contended that NewJeans merely drew inspiration from Jeans, rather than committing plagiarism.
During her emergency press conference, CEO Min Hee-jin addressed the plagiarism allegation against ILLIT and stated that “They replicated a significant portion of our production formula.”She also highlighted concerns about HYBE’s multi-label system. In light of this, Belift Lab, the label under ILLIT, has filed a lawsuit against Min Hee-jin for impeding their business and making defamatory statements.
