During an earnings presentation, Microsoft announced that the latest installment of Call of Duty has achieved the most successful launch in the franchise’s entire history.
In spite of certain criticisms regarding the Multiplayer’s inadequate map selection, skill-based matchmaking issues, and various glitches, Black Ops 6 experienced a robust launch weekend.
Over the first weekend, BO6 registered more than 306,000 simultaneous players on Steam, surpassing the peak of 190,273 set by Modern Warfare 3.
This popularity has proven beneficial for both Activision and Microsoft. According to a report from CharlieIntel, Black Ops 6 broke records for both the number of players on launch day and the highest increase in Game Pass subscriptions within a single day.
Additionally, BO6 achieved a record for the largest number of PC players during its launch weekend in the history of the series. It led all Call of Duty titles in total player count, hours played, and matches completed during that opening period.
“The launch of Black Ops 6 last week was the largest in the history of Call of Duty, establishing a new benchmark for day one players as well as a significant uptick in Game Pass subscriptions,”stated Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. “Sales on PlayStation and Steam also increased by over 60% compared to last year.”
Mixed feelings surrounded the title’s performance among BO6 and Xbox enthusiasts, primarily due to its day-one availability for Game Pass users.
In response to these apprehensions, Microsoft CFO Amy Hood cautioned that Xbox revenue might see a decline year over year as Call of Duty is offered through Game Pass. This allows revenue to be accounted for monthly rather than as a one-time influx.
The key challenge for Treyarch will be maintaining player interest throughout the game’s lifecycle. Matt Cox, the General Manager of Call of Duty, assured fans that the development team is only at the beginning stages of their plans.
“From the very start, our objective has been to make this fantastic game accessible to as many players as we can, regardless of where they play or how they access it,”Cox explained. “Black Ops 6 is a remarkable title, and the feedback from the Call of Duty community has been phenomenal. This is just the start. Nuketown is just days away, and Season 1 is fast approaching. We’re only getting warmed up.”
Season 1 of Black Ops 6 is set to officially launch on Thursday, November 14, 2024.
