Legendary boxer Mike Tyson is facing a lawsuit amounting to $1.59 million following his disappointing bout against Jake Paul. This fight, which occurred in November, garnered significant attention on Netflix, causing the platform to crash during the event. However, the aftermath could pose serious repercussions for the 58-year-old boxing icon.
Reports indicate that Tyson had entered into a promotional agreement with Medier, a firm associated with the online casino and betting platform Rabona. The company claims that Tyson abandoned this deal to pursue the fight against Jake Paul, raising questions about the validity of his contractual commitments.
According to sources, Tyson officially terminated the contract in March, coinciding with the announcement of the fight’s initial date, July 20. This date was later pushed back to November due to Tyson suffering significant health challenges during his training regimen.
Lawsuit Filed Against Tyson
The lawsuit, lodged in October 2024 in London’s High Court, targets both Tyson and his company, Tyrannic. Medier argues that Tyson’s abrupt exit from their agreement has resulted in a financial loss exceeding $1.5 million. They assert that Tyson’s actions were motivated by a new deal with Netflix to face Paul, thereby breaching his prior commitments.
“The true reason for Mr. Tyson and Tyrannic’s hasty and unlawful termination was because Mr. Tyson had agreed to a deal, sponsored by Netflix, to fight the influencer Jake Paul,” stated a Medier lawyer.
Tyson’s legal representatives are firmly defending their client’s position. In a statement to ESPN, they countered the allegations, asserting that Medier had repeatedly violated the terms of their contract by exceeding the granted restricted license. This, they claim, resulted in significant financial and reputational damage to both Tyson and Tyrannic.
“Tyrannic properly terminated the agreement and is confident that the Court will view this dispute in its favor,” the boxer’s team added, highlighting their belief in the righteousness of their case.
Despite the legal turmoil, Tyson’s performance in the ring on November 15 left much to be desired, with ‘The Problem Child’ Paul securing a decisive victory by unanimous decision. Speculation has circulated that Tyson might earn up to $700 million for a potential rematch; however, such opportunities remain unconfirmed.
