Mike Tyson’s Decision to Make Major Life Change in Order to Legally Fight Jake Paul

Due to legal requirements, renowned boxer Mike Tyson has had to make a notable adjustment to his lifestyle in order to compete against Jake Paul in Texas this upcoming summer.

On July 20, Netflix’s first-ever live boxing event will feature influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul facing off against 58-year-old ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson. However, due to the location of the fight, the former champion has had to give up using marijuana.

It is widely known that Mike Tyson is a frequent user of marijuana, as he has been seen smoking during each episode of his ‘Hotboxin’ podcast. In addition, the renowned boxer also offers his own brand of cannabis-infused gummies in the shape of an ear, a nod to his infamous incident of biting off Evander Holyfield’s ear in 1997.

Despite Tyson not wanting to, he is being required to relinquish his use of marijuana due to its classification as a prohibited substance on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation’s list. Therefore, if he were to consume it before the match, failing a drug test would lead to both a monetary penalty and a 90-day ban.

Additionally, a win for Mike against Paul would be declared a “no contest,”which is not the desired outcome for the returning fighter.

According to Tyson’s publicist, he stopped using marijuana only to comply with all the rules. However, he remains a staunch supporter of the medicinal properties of cannabis for his own health and for others in similar situations.

The random drug tests are conducted on the day of the fight and typically take up to a week for the results to be released. Therefore, there is no possibility of the fight being cancelled. However, there is another intriguing factor that must be considered.

Despite both Jake and Mike’s desire for the rules to be altered so that the fight will be recorded on their professional records, the current plan is for the match to be classified as an exhibition. If this policy remains, Tyson’s decision to abstain from marijuana use may end up being in vain.

Before his highly-anticipated return to the ring, it remains to be seen if Tyson’s decision to abstain from using drugs, as he had done in his previous fights, including his 2020 match against Roy Jones Jr., will have any impact on the renowned boxer’s performance. Only time will tell if this change will prove beneficial or detrimental to Tyson’s performance.
