Amidst the ongoing legal dispute between ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin and HYBE, allegations have surfaced accusing the former of plagiarizing the concept of NewJeans from a Mexican girl group.
A post titled “What’s the difference between NewJeans and Jeans?”was uploaded to the popular South Korean online community forum Nate Pann on May 19, 2024.
The post discusses how NewJeans’s concept is reminiscent of JNS (also known as Jeans), a well-known Mexican girl group that made their debut in 1996. Several people pointed out the striking similarities between the music video for “Attention”and that of “Me pongo mis jeans.”
Moreover, the idea of “Ditto”bears a strong resemblance to Jeans’s “Dime que me amas.”
It was also noted that many of the choreographic elements in NewJeans’s work are reminiscent of those found in Jeans’s music.
Nevertheless, what stood out even more was the striking resemblance in album and CD designs. In their debut era, NewJeans opted for a blue-and-white vintage pattern for their albums and CDs, which bore a striking resemblance to the design of Jeans’s CDs. Furthermore, it was observed that NewJeans also used similar fonts and logos to those used by Jeans.
Both girl groups also share a similar style. For example, during NewJeans’s debut era, they incorporated a lot of denim into their outfits, which closely resembles the styling of Jeans. Furthermore, the scarf top worn by Hanni in the “Attention”music video bears a striking resemblance to the fashion of a former Jeans member.
It is widely believed that Danielle’s viral space buns were also influenced by Jeans.
Despite attempts to downplay the supposed plagiarism, news of it has quickly spread throughout Mexico. Many have noted that a couple of similarities could be overlooked, but the numerous overlapping concepts strongly suggest that Min Hee Jin used Jeans as a source of inspiration for NewJeans’s designs.
Korean netizens have accused NewJeans of blatant plagiarism after their CEO Min Hee Jin accused ILLIT of the same offense. This has led people to mock her for what is seen as hypocrisy on her part.
After reading some comments, it was observed that
- “Wow. If it’s Min Hee Jin, it’s creative, but if it’s someone else, it’s plagiarism.”
- “So, how did they get the audacity to claim ILLIT is plagiarizing?”
- “Everything from the group name, the concept, even the music videos are stolen. But when it’s them, they are ‘jumping on a trend,’ but when another group does the same, they say ‘everything is similar, they plagiarized everything.’”
- “Am I the only one who doesn’t think it’s just a reference?”
- “NewJeans even copied BTS’s Hanbok performance at Geunjeongjeon Hall, but they claimed they are the first.”
