It has been almost a decade since Interstellar premiered in theaters, yet new details continue to emerge. The latest is a theory that will fundamentally alter your perspective on the Christopher Nolan masterpiece.
The science fiction genre has always been a breeding ground for speculation, largely due to Nolan’s complex narrative style and the inclusion of actual scientific principles such as relativity, quantum gravity, and higher-dimensional space in the film.
In contrast, this fresh fan theory suggests that Interstellar holds a deeper spiritual significance. According to this theory, Joseph Cooper actually passed away in the beginning of the movie, and the subsequent events portrayed his journey into the afterlife.

As a reminder from the opening scene, Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) has a dream where he crashes his aircraft. Approximately an hour later, the team experiences a similar event as they enter the planet’s atmosphere, with the same footage being utilized.
Upon initial observation, I believed this to be a minor error, but upon further consideration, I recognized that this was Christopher Nolan, as expressed by the TikToker.
“Surely, Christopher Nolan would not incorporate repetitive footage without a clear intention, correct? It was confusing until I shifted my perspective and examined it from a different angle.”
StarkVerse continued to emphasize that according to realistic standards, anyone involved in the crash should have perished. As a result, he made the decision to rewatch the movie with the Cooper death theory in mind, and this ultimately caused a major shift in his perspective.
After his death, everything we witness is his voyage into the afterlife. He is unable to remain on Earth and must depart. Therefore, the Lazarus mission alludes to Cooper’s passing and his expedition into the unfamiliar.
There is ample evidence to back up this theory, including the Endurance crew consistently using the phrase “the big sleep.”
Furthermore, Cooper is confronted with the heart-wrenching years of emotional messages from his children, as the TikToker pointed out that they bear a striking resemblance to the private thoughts one might have about their parents following a sudden and accidental passing.
TARS’s words, “See you on the other side,”spoken to Cooper while he is facing Gargantua, are another hint that they will meet again in the afterlife.
However, the most significant indication comes after Dr. Mann (Matt Damon) reveals to Cooper that one sees their children right before they die. As Cooper passes through Gargantua’s event horizon, which StarkVerse suggests “represents the ultimate change,”he catches a glimpse of Murph in the Tesseract and ultimately reunites with her on her deathbed.
He remarked, “I found it strange how nobody in the room seemed to notice or acknowledge Cooper when he entered. It was as if he was invisible.”
Despite the case being closed, there are still many Interstellar fans who believe otherwise. Streamer JaredFPS, who gained over 7.6 million views on TikTok, also uploaded the video on X/Twitter, where it has now been viewed over 11 million times.
Upon reading the comment, the reader exclaimed, “This is giving me chills! I am definitely going to watch it again, for the hundredth time, with this newfound perspective.”
Upon hearing this theory, another person remarked, “I have always observed that the footage remained identical in both sequences, but I never thought there was any significance to it. It is truly intriguing how no one seems to even acknowledge him at the end.”

Despite some support for the theory, there are those who remain skeptical. One individual even pointed out, “While I find this theory intriguing, I am doubtful of its validity. Productions, such as Nolan movies, have been known to reuse footage from a single day of filming.”
