Minister Yu In-chon’s Proposal for Reevaluating Alternative Military Service for BTS and Other Artists in the Popular Culture Industry

During an interview with YTN on the 30th, Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Yu In-chon suggested that the option of alternative military service for popular culture artists should be taken into consideration.

The speaker emphasized that BTS’s accomplishments on their journey can be compared to winning multiple gold medals at the Olympics. As a result, he proposed the exploration of alternative military service options for popular culture artists, stating that the current system for athletes should be upheld and expanded to include artists in the industry.

During a sports sector meeting at the Seoul branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art on the 2nd, Minister Yu reiterated his support for the current special military service system. He strongly opposed the proposal by the Military Manpower Administration to eliminate this system.

Minister Yu responded to An Se-young’s criticism of the Badminton Association by highlighting the older generation’s failure to adapt to the changing landscape of today’s athletes. He remarked that the sports industry still operates under a “follow us or get nothing”mentality, which can be challenging for young athletes to accept.
