Minor update to Valorant 9.03 improves quality of life, significantly reduces power of Brimstone and Viper

Riot Games has released patch 9.03 notes for Valorant, which include a significant alteration to Brimstone and Viper in a small section that players may have overlooked.

The patch notes for Valorant version 9.03 contained a brief mention of “Ground Spreading Abilities,”specifically referencing Brimstone’s Incendiary and Viper’s Snakebite.

The alteration ensures that damaging abilities spread consistently on the ground and inflict damage within their diameter, particularly when coming into contact with terrain and walls.

Although it may appear insignificant, this change or bug fix will greatly affect the lineups for both characters.

Prior to this update, the abilities of Brimstone and Viper were able to penetrate through various terrain objects such as boxes, rocks, and walls in order to inflict damage on enemies located on the opposite side. This gave players the opportunity to use these abilities to check corners and strategically position themselves near boxes or utilize wall-penetrating lineups for unique post-plant tactics.

In the current meta, small and large boxes have become common on spike sites, serving as safe havens for planting.

After the update, players will need to be cautious when using these abilities on sites, as even a slight miscalculation could result in the spread being blocked by a box, potentially impacting the outcome of a round.

Those who frequently use either agent will need to experiment with their lineups on every map and reassess their effectiveness following the implementation of this update.

The response from players to the change has been varied. While some Valorant fans are delighted that they will no longer face unexpected damage through walls, others have expressed mixed feelings.

“According to one player, the recent change has been a source of annoyance for a while now, and they exclaimed, “Let’s go!!”on social media.”

Other players are displeased that their agent has been significantly indirectly weakened.

“Another player exclaimed, “This is EVIL.”

Despite player sentiment, Riot’s change signals that they never intended for ground-spreading abilities to be able to move through walls. It is yet to be determined if this will affect the overall meta, potentially causing Brimstone and Viper to move down the tier list.
