Miquella plays a vital role in the lore of Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, but what significance do his crosses hold and how do they affect gameplay?
The story trailer for Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree centered on a group of Tarnished who followed the journey of Miquella after he broke free from Mohg’s grasp and sought refuge in the Shadow Lands. Along his path, he left behind a trail of golden pillars called Miquella’s Crosses, as the demigod embarked on a mysterious quest towards an unknown destination.
As players embark on the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, much emphasis will be placed on Miquella’s Crosses, as numerous NPCs are eager to uncover more of them and urge the player to do the same. However, it is important to understand the purpose of these crosses and whether they offer any benefits to gameplay or character development.
Miquella’s Crosses have no in-game effect but are useful clues.
Miquella’s Crosses
Aside from serving as a piece of history, Miquella’s Crosses have limited functionality. When engaged with, they reveal a diary-like entry from Miquella, chronicling the detachment of yet another portion of his divine form. Additionally, his flesh and blood have transformed into blossoms that can be utilized in the creation of various items.
Miquella’s Crosses have multiple purposes, including serving as landmarks and providing clues to his destination. This often leads to the discovery of NPCs, Sites of Grace, and Scadutree Fragments in close proximity. Therefore, they do serve a purpose in gameplay, although not in a direct manner.
It can be inferred that Miquella’s body is deteriorating due to the mistreatment inflicted by Mohg, Lord of Blood. Despite being trapped in a cocoon, the transformed creature remains in his previous form. However, it is suggested that Miquella has managed to escape his old body and is now confined to another one which is gradually decaying as he journeys through the Shadow Lands.
The act of discarding his body could also be seen as Miquella renouncing his loyalty to the Golden Order, his mother’s faith, and the laws of the Elden Ring. This implies that Miquella has his own motives in Shadow of the Edtree, independent from the desires of other characters.
