Celebrating their 10th anniversary, TWICE, the renowned girl group under JYP Entertainment from the third generation of K-pop, continues to maintain a vigorous schedule with regular comebacks and worldwide tours. In addition to group activities, the agency has embraced solo ventures and sub-units to maximize the talents of each member. While their popularity may not be as high as during their peak, TWICE remains a significant source of income for the company.
In Japan, TWICE stands out as one of the leading K-pop girl groups. Taking advantage of this popularity, JYP launched the sub-unit MiSaMo, consisting of three notable Japanese members—Mina, Momo, and Sana—who are beloved by fans. MiSaMo primarily engages in promotions within Japan and has recently returned with their second mini-album, Haute Couture, featuring tracks like “New Look” and “Identity.”
Nevertheless, a recent performance of “New Look” has ignited considerable debate. During a pivotal choreography segment, the three members of TWICE were depicted lying beneath male dancers while executing suggestive movements. This particular aspect left some fans feeling uncomfortable and out of sync with the song’s theme of self-expression and chasing ambitions. The provocative choreography has faced backlash, particularly from Chinese fans, who have called for alterations to the dance. Notably, Sana’s supporters even organized a protest truck directed at JYP’s headquarters.
Supporters contend that the choreography diverges from the refined aesthetic MiSaMo aimed to showcase with “New Look” and Haute Couture. Although TWICE has gradually embraced a more sophisticated and bold image over the years, particularly during the “Ready To Be” world tour, not every dance sequence has been well-received. Fans advocate for the group’s artistic growth but emphasize the importance of finding a balance between allure and decorum.
