On September 21, 2024, animation studio Kyoto Animation announced their exciting lineup for 2025, which includes the highly anticipated Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid anime film, titled Samishigariya no Ryuu. This announcement was made through a captivating trailer, indicating that the film will be a part of next year’s anime offerings. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is adapted from a popular manga series of the same name, created by Cool-kyou Shinja. The manga first began publication in May 2013 and has so far compiled 15 volumes (in Japanese). Additionally, the manga has inspired two previous anime adaptations, also produced by Kyoto Animation.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Anime Film Scheduled for 2025
The announcement trailer for the Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid anime film features one of the series’ beloved characters, Kanna Kamui. In the trailer, Kanna’s dragon form is depicted as crying in shadow, accompanied by an original soundtrack that resonates with her character. The trailer concludes with a reveal of the film’s anticipated release window in 2025.
It is expected that the upcoming Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid anime film will adapt chapters from the original manga rather than crafting an original storyline, remaining true to the work of Cool-kyou Shinja (Kaname Raigi).
Beyond Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Shinja’s notable works also include I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying, The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace, and Peach Boy Riverside, all of which have also been adapted into anime series.
The initial anime adaptation of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid premiered on January 12, 2017, concluding its first season on April 6, 2017, with a total of 13 episodes. A sequel to the series was announced in early 2019, but the production faced delays due to a tragic arson attack on Kyoto Animation on July 18, 2019.
Thanks to the unwavering support from fans, the sequel was successfully produced and aired starting July 8, 2021. The upcoming Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid anime film is anticipated to be a continuation of season 2 of the series.
What to Expect from the Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Anime Film?
As the project is in its early announcement stage, the production team has not yet disclosed an official synopsis. However, based on the teaser trailer and the film’s title Samishigariya no Ryuu, which translates to “A Lonely Dragon Wants to be Loved,”it is speculated that the storyline will focus on Kanna Kamui.
Kanna Kamui is depicted as a young dragon who was left behind in the dragon realm when Tohru, one of the main characters, began her role as a maid for Kobayashi. The film may delve into Kanna’s backstory or present scenarios that highlight her feelings of loneliness.
