In the quest for success in professional sports, some athletes take extraordinary measures. A prime example is Ryan Lambert, who shockingly consumed 900 raw eggs over the course of a month to enhance his baseball performance.
It’s clear that sheer determination and rigorous training often don’t suffice in the competitive world of athletics. Sometimes, an unconventional dietary approach can provide the necessary edge, even if it involves a rather unpalatable source of nutrition.
Ryan Lambert: From College Cut to Mets Prospect
Just two years back, Lambert was cut from the Missouri State college baseball team. Faced with this setback, he implemented some drastic changes aimed at gaining an upper hand against his rivals.
In hopes of increasing his velocity, Ryan Lambert once chugged nearly 1, 000 raw eggs in a month. Meet the 100-mph throwing, chicken-heart-eating Mets prospect who just may be the most eccentric player in camp: https://t.co/78mHDH8AOU

As covered by MLB reporter Anthony DiComo, Lambert’s ambitious endeavor involved consuming 30 raw eggs daily, accumulating to 900 per month, all in hopes of boosting his pitching speed. Remarkably, his efforts paid off.
He propelled his pitch speed to approximately 99 mph during practices, a feat he showcased on Twitter/X, which attracted the interest of the Oklahoma Sooners. When the subsequent MLB draft arrived, Lambert seized the opportunity to sign with the Mets, and he has since continued to elevate his game.
Currently, he has recorded a top pitch of 100.9 mph, and while his overall pitching statistics have room for improvement, he is viewed as one of the league’s most promising relief pitchers. Lambert is optimistic about pushing his speed further, setting sights on hitting 102 mph with continued dedication to his craft.
Reflecting on his drastic egg consumption, Lambert commented, “Day one, it was an adjustment for sure. But I’m not a chicken. I like a little adversity and challenge. It kind of gets me going.” His unusual diet also included occasional servings of chicken hearts, although he has since moderated his egg intake to around ten per day.
A Legacy of Speed: Aroldis Chapman’s Record

Despite achieving a notable 100.9 mph pitch, Lambert’s speed still falls short in the competitive landscape dominated by legendary players such as Aroldis Chapman. The former Boston Red Sox pitcher holds the record for the highest pitch speed, clocking in at an astounding 105.8 mph in 2010, followed closely by 105.7 mph in 2016. Ben Joyce of the Los Angeles Angels recently approached this benchmark with a 105.5 mph pitch in 2024.
The top ten speed records are largely filled by Chapman, who has several pitches exceeding 105 mph. As Lambert continues to refine his technique, it appears he may need to increase his egg intake again to chase the pinnacle of pitching excellence.
