A collision of worlds occurs as a modder and Redditor successfully constructs a modern gaming PC within the shell of a Mac Classic, leaving us with mixed emotions.
‘A ‘sleeper’ build is a type of gaming PC build that is becoming increasingly popular. It involves rejecting the flashy RGB and glass side panels commonly found on modern gaming PCs, and instead opting for a more discreet look with top-of-the-line components hidden inside plain beige boxes.’
A PC modder and builder has taken the concept even further and managed to fit a complete modern gaming PC inside the body of a vintage Macintosh Classic 2.
The Mac Classic 2, which was launched in 1991, maintained the same design as its predecessors, featuring a rectangular beige box with a small CRT screen. In contrast to other computers of its time, the Mac Classic was a self-contained unit, with its monitor and components housed within the case.
Modder Design_and_Stuff utilized a damaged Macintosh Classic 2 and proceeded to make modifications to enable it to support contemporary PC parts. The primary focus of the project was utilizing a Dremel multitool to create openings in the case to fit in the necessary components, including fans, motherboard, power supply, and graphics card.
In order to create more internal space, Design_and_Stuff replaced the old CRT with a modern 8-inch LCD. To maintain the curved appearance of a CRT screen, a thin and flexible clear acrylic was used on the front. The iconic Apple logo was also modified to function as the power button.
The chassis houses a capable modern gaming PC, which includes an AMD Ryzen 5600X CPU, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070, and 16GB of RAM.
Despite some expressing their hope that the Mac Classic was already non-functional before the project began, commenters on Reddit were still impressed by the project.
