A GameCube was given a modern touch by a YouTuber and modder who creatively incorporated a mini gaming PC while still preserving its retro aesthetic.
There are currently numerous PCs available for purchase that have incredibly compact designs. The Ayaneo Retro Mini PC, for example, is capable of running the latest video games, despite its size being small enough to fit into a coat pocket.
As Odd Tinkering, a YouTuber, observed the compact size of modern PCs, he was struck with an idea. He realized that these small machines could potentially be housed within a classic GameCube shell, creating a unique combination of contemporary and vintage technology.
The goal of the project was not simply to create a PC with a GameCube appearance, but also to ensure that the front control ports and power button were fully operational.
The chosen mini PC was an Asus PN53, equipped with an AMD Ryzen 5 7535HS processor. As it was a barebones version, Odd had to supplement it with RAM and an SSD for storage. After disassembling the PC to remove the small mainboard, Odd added the RAM and SSD and made necessary modifications to ensure a proper fit.
To confirm the functionality of the front controller ports, Odd utilized a USB to GameCube controller adaptor and dismantled it. He proceeded to merge the adaptor board with the original controller ports in the GameCube.
The GameCube utilized for this project was an empty shell, lacking its external components. In order to accommodate the motherboard from the Asus PC, he crafted a new base section and back plate for the rear I/O ports using 3D printing technology. He then painted it, meticulously matching the color to ensure it matched the original top portion.
Once put together, the controller ports function as intended. The GameCube PC is capable of flawlessly emulating classic games such as Super Mario Sunshine, and it can even run Counter-Strike 2 at a playable level, though not exceptionally.
