Modders discover Rabbit R1 is an Android app that can be used on phones

The Rabbit R1 operates on a modified version of Android, and just one week after its release, enthusiasts have successfully adapted RabbitOS to run on various smartphones.

The debut of the Humane AI Pin and the Rabbit R1, two innovative AI devices, has sparked controversy within the tech industry. Tech influencer Marques Brownlee famously labeled the Humane AI Pin as the “worst product”he has ever reviewed, while the Rabbit R1 received a lackluster reception upon its initial release.

Previously, users could only access Rabbit OS on the dedicated Rabbit R1 device. However, recent developments have allowed for Rabbit OS to be installed on mid-range Android smartphones. Marcel, an X user, successfully installed the Rabbit OS installer file on his regular Android phone. This revealed that Rabbit OS essentially functions as an Android app, greatly reducing the need for specialized hardware, with a few minor issues.

In his videos, he demonstrated testing R1’s main features such as Vision, but unfortunately encountered issues. He also attempted to use the volume keys to play Spotify on the device, but the app was glitchy and expectedly so, as it was not designed for this hardware.

Despite being an Android enthusiast and a fellow journalist at Android Authority, Mishaal Rahman successfully installed Rabbit OS on a 2-year-old midrange Android smartphone, specifically the Google Pixel 6a.

Although Rahman claims he did not test any other features of the app, it appears that another user was able to successfully run Android apps on the $200 AI gadget. However, as of now, the video seems to have been either removed or set to private.

Rabbit insists it’s more than just an app

After receiving criticism, Rabbit has issued an official response stating that although R1 utilizes a modified version of Android Open Source Project (AOSP), the Rabbit OS and LAM operate on the cloud, indicating minimal computing is done on the device itself.

The statement clarifies that rabbit OS and LAM operate on the cloud and are not compatible with Android apps. While there may be unofficial emulators for rabbit OS available, they do not accurately represent our AI and LAM services. Our cloud-based system utilizes specialized AOSP and firmware modifications, making it impossible for unauthorized APKs to access our services. It is important to note that rabbit OS is specifically designed for r1 and we do not endorse the use of third-party clients. After a recent OTA update, we have implemented additional measures to verify cloud requests and safeguard against malicious and illegal cyber activities directed towards our services. We reserve the right to take action against any such activities.

As the latest update now verifies requests to hardware, it is possible that this workaround may no longer be effective in newer versions of RabbitOS. However, various YouTubers, such as Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) and Dave2D, have pointed out that the Rabbit R1 is an unfinished device with subpar battery life and an unreliable software performance.
