Modern Warfare 3 has reportedly withheld post-launch multiplayer maps to reserve them for Black Ops 6, causing frustration among players.
Sledgehammer Games kicked off MW3 with an impressive array of content. Season 1 debuted three new multiplayer maps, followed by four new environments in Season 2.
The development team maintained this momentum in Season 3 by introducing another four maps, though the next seasonal update added only three.
However, Season 5 saw a significant reduction in new content, providing only one multiplayer map, and the upcoming update is set to contribute just one more.
As it stands, MW3 boasts a total of 33 maps, which surpasses MW2’s final count of 26. Despite this achievement, rumors suggest that the total could have been even greater.
According to CharlieIntel, “There are indications that MW3’s later seasons have fewer new 6v6 maps because Treyarch has allegedly taken Sledgehammer Games’ maps for Black Ops 6’s subsequent seasons.”
This assertion has led to speculation that this might explain why Seasons 5 and 6 each featured only one new map, prompting players to voice their concerns in the comments.
CoD insider TheGhostOfHope supported this claim and expressed that it feels “quite unfair. Treyarch and Infinity Ward are unable to produce as many maps as Sledgehammer Games, which reflects poorly on them, resulting in diminished 6v6 map support for Seasons 5 and 6.”
Conversely, some players have shown appreciation for Sledgehammer Games’ robust multiplayer offerings.
One player mentioned, “Sledgehammer did exceptional work with MW3. They provided plenty of content and aimed to fulfill community desires, despite limitations imposed by Infinity Ward.”
At the same time, the map pool in Black Ops 6 has underwhelmed players, leading many to favor the prospect of additional maps from Sledgehammer Games.
“Treyarch’s maps are disappointing. I would MUCH prefer Sledgehammer Games maps over anything Treyarch creates,” stated another player.
While we know that Black Ops 6 will launch with 16 maps, the details regarding the post-launch roadmap from the studio remain unclear.
