Monopoly Go is making the shift from a mobile game to a board game, but it will have its own unique characteristics separate from the original Monopoly. The game will prioritize faster gameplay.
Monopoly Go, produced by Hasbro, has proved to be a highly lucrative venture, generating billions of dollars in profit in just its first year. Diverging from traditional Monopoly, this mobile version is played virtually, incorporating a combination of purchasing properties, mini-games, and a plethora of microtransactions.
Similarly to The Queen’s Gambit, which inspired a non-chess board game adaptation, Monopoly Go is also following suit with its source material. Hasbro has recently unveiled the board game version of Monopoly Go, although a release date has not yet been announced.
Monopoly Go: The Classic Game Turned into a Board Game
Monopoly Go is adapting the mobile game into cardboard & plastic form
Monopoly Go is designed for 2-4 players, however, it differs from the original game in that it requires multiple boards. In Monopoly Go, each player is given a mini-board with the objective of being the first to construct a Landmark made up of four pieces of the same color.
Players can acquire Landmark pieces by rolling the dice and landing on spaces that correspond to its color. Additionally, they have the ability to hinder other players through the use of mechanics such as Bank Heists, Shut Downs, and Mega Shut Downs, which are also featured in the mobile game.
Monopoly Go is designed to offer a quicker and simpler gameplay experience compared to the original version, which focuses on managing properties and finances. Those who buy the Monopoly Go board game will also receive a code that can be used up to four times to unlock a special golden game piece in the app.
Despite the initial perception that a Monopoly Go board game may be a subject of ridicule, it is in fact a unique version. Rather than simply adding the Monopoly Go branding to the original game, Hasbro has created something separate that hopefully resonates with fans of the app.
