MTG Assassin’s Creed’s Underrated Rogue Commander Leaves Opponents Defenseless

One of the most intriguing cards from Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed is Shay Cormac. This two-mana Orzhov card effortlessly pierces through opponents’ defenses, removing their protection and enhancing its own strength.

Despite the numerous entries in the Assassin’s Creed franchise and its vast range of time periods and main characters, one game that stands out as a true standout is Assassin’s Creed Rogue. Unfortunately, this gem was not given the recognition it deserved upon its initial release, despite having both devoted fans and critics.

Despite being released during the same time as the next-generation Assassin’s Creed: Unity, Rogue unfortunately fell into obscurity due to its status as a previous-generation entry. Despite Unity facing its own set of release problems, primarily stemming from technical difficulties, Rogue was overshadowed.

Even years after its release, Assassin’s Creed Rogue has remained a standout entry for players who have picked it up. This installment continues the beloved boat-based gameplay from Assassin’s Creed 3 and Black Flag, much to the delight of fans.

A notable aspect of Rogue is the refreshing viewpoint provided by Shay Cormac, a former Assassin who becomes a Templar. Shay offers a unique angle on the ongoing conflict between the two factions, and their representation in the MTG game truly does the character justice.

Shay Cormac is a Legendary Creature, specifically a 1/1 Human Knight Rogue. Although initially lacking in combat prowess, this card has the potential to rapidly increase in strength as the game progresses.

The primary purpose of Shay is to utilize its first ability. By paying a single generic mana, all of the hexproof, indestructible, protection, shroud, and ward abilities of opponents’ permanents are removed until the end of the turn. This effectively strips away any forms of protection, making even the most resilient threats vulnerable and able to be removed from the game by Shay.

In addition to its useful capability, Shay Cormac also distributes bounty counters to enemy Creatures when they are targeted by one of your controlled effects – a task made simpler by utilizing the card’s initial ability to remove targeting protection.

Whenever a Creature possessing a bounty counter perishes, Shay’s strength increases with two +1/+1 counters, transforming from a mere 1/1 into a formidable force.

Despite being smaller in size than a traditional MTG release, Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed still manages to include a diverse selection of Assassins from the franchise. It is reassuring to see that in addition to beloved characters such as Ezio and Altaïr, the set also features lesser-known but intriguing figures like Shay Cormac.
