The Bloomburrow set for Magic: The Gathering offers a plethora of thrilling factions to draft once the pre-release starts on July 26th.
It is evident that Bloomburrow is poised to be an exhilarating MTG set for players of all types. Devoted followers are pleased to have a predominantly self-contained, traditional fantasy realm to explore after the genre explorations of Murders at Karlov Manor and Outlaws of Thunder Junction.
In addition, MTG enthusiasts of all experience levels can easily dive into this captivating set solely focused on animals, thanks to its accessible and thrilling starting point. Bloomburrow’s draft environment is the perfect opportunity for both new and seasoned players to immerse themselves in the set from the very start of its pre-release.
To ensure you are familiar with how these factions operate prior to July 26th, we will walk you through each of Bloomburrow’s draft archetypes.
All MTG Bloomburrow Draft Archetypes
Birdfolk: White/Blue
Birdfolk possess the Flying ability, which enables them to effortlessly glide over your opponents’ blockers and deal direct damage.
Despite this, the majority of powerful cards in this archetype are land-based, as Birds provide boosts to non-flying creatures and enable strategic attacks to secure victory.
Ratfolk with Blue and Black Fur
MTG Vren the Relentless, Rat Commander from Bloomburrow
Just like other Dimir strategies in MTG, Ratfolk place great importance on the graveyard. However, unlike Golgari recursion, Bloomburrow Ratfolk reach their full potential when your graveyard is filled with enough cards to activate their Threshold abilities.
In addition to graveyard-based mechanics, blue and black also provide a variety of strong removal options to regulate the game’s pace until the necessary conditions for Threshold are fulfilled.
Lizardfolk: Black/Red
Lizardfolk is renowned as one of Bloomburrow’s most captivating archetypes, as their crucial abilities are only triggered when their opponents receive damage on the same turn.
The most effective strategy for this archetype involves utilizing abilities that consistently inflict direct damage, whether it be through burn spells or Enchantments that gradually wear down opponents’ life points. Once the flow of direct damage is established, Lizards can confidently push forward and take an aggressive stance to secure a swift victory.
Raccoonfolk: Red/green
The Gruul archetype of Bloomburrow offers incentives for making significant investments, providing an extra benefit for utilizing large quantities of mana each turn.
Bloomburrow’s biggest inhabitants are none other than raccoons, and these massive creatures can cause destruction when they appear on the field, especially when supported by Expend.
Rabbitfolk: Green and White
Selesnya is well-known for its ability to go wide in MTG, and Bloomburrow’s Rabbitfolk perfectly embody this strength. The introduction of the Offspring mechanic has elevated Rabbits to the top tier of token strategies in Magic.
While other draft archetypes may have stronger individual cards, none can match the ease with which Rabbitfolk can go wide. By flooding the board with tokens, you can bypass opponents’ ability to block and overwhelm them with a multitude of Creatures.
Batfolk: White/black
Zoraline, Bat Cleric Commander from MTG Bloomburrow
Bloomburrow’s bats are a unique lifegain strategy, incorporating the concept of life loss in a similar manner to Vampires on planes such as Ixalan.
This Orzhov archetype can effectively endure and withstand opponents’ attacks, utilizing precise life total manipulation to dictate the flow of the game.
Otterfolk: Red/blue
The spellslinger archetype of Bloomburrow draws inspiration from Lutri, the Spellchaser, and the long-standing tradition of spellcraft in Izzet.
This game focuses on the use of Instants and Sorceries, aided by various Creatures that enhance their effects through duplication, Prowess, and other abilities related to spellcasting.
Squirrelfolk: Black/Green
Despite being a surprise, squirrels have made a strong impact in Magic with the introduction of popular Commander Chatterfang, Squirrel General. This Goglgari draft strategy is breaking new ground for squirrels by incorporating the growing trend of Food tokens.
Despite the fact that green offers Squirrelfolk the ability to play large, strong creatures and black provides access to potent removal spells, it is important to focus on filling your graveyard in order to consistently activate Forage abilities, even if you do not currently have any Food resources available.
Mousefolk Color Combination: Red/White
The Boros archetype of Mousefolk is known for its aggressive play style, utilizing inexpensive and frail Creatures to quickly establish a strong board presence. These Creatures are then strengthened to become formidable threats.
Thanks to the affordable cost of mana Mice and Offspring, you will rarely encounter difficulty in having a greater number of creatures than your opponents. Additionally, enhancing your Creatures with spells and Equipment will activate their inherent Valiant ability, providing them with an extra boost.
Frogfolk: Green and Blue
By combining the power of blink and ETB triggers, Bloomburrow’s Frogs continuously gain value and make steady progress towards the endgame.
Despite the abundance of mana production in Simic archetypes, you can still utilize this reliable resource to populate your board and still have enough remaining to re-trigger your ETB effects. Additionally, blinking can be a valuable tactic for evading targeted removal and safeguarding your most valuable cards from being taken out by opponents.
