MTG Foundations: Everything New from Gen Con

MTG Foundations: Everything New from Gen Con

Magic: The Gathering Foundations is a one-of-a-kind set that will be released on November 15, differentiating itself from MTG’s four annual Premier Set releases. Wizards has provided an initial glimpse at the set and booster information for Foundations at Gen Con.

Foundations is designed to cater to novice players by introducing them to the game, while also offering a range of potent new cards and essential reprints for long-time Magic enthusiasts.

This set, known as MTG Foundations, will be a crucial component of Wizards of the Coast’s endeavors to revive the Standard format in physical play. The newly introduced and reintroduced cards in this set are designed to remain legally playable in Standard until at least 2029.

As Foundations is expected to remain an essential element of Magic for years to come, excitement surrounding the set is beginning to increase. With its excellent new starting point, the set is garnering more attention.

At Gen Con, the set for Magic: The Gathering Foundations was announced and we will now cover the initial and significant information. This will help you understand your choices when it comes to purchasing the set in November.

The fastest and most efficient method of getting started with a game of Magic is through MTG Foundations. By mixing and matching Jumpstart Boosters, players can easily create a functional deck using two separate halves.

The Jumpstart Boosters from Magic: The Gathering Foundations consist of:

  • 20 cards in each booster, including lands
  • 1 of 46 possible Jumpstart archetypes
  • 1 Theme insert

Beginner Box

The Foundations Beginner Box is a recently launched product designed to provide the ultimate introduction to the world of MTG. While Starter Kits have previously served as a way for new players to begin their journey, the Foundations Beginner Box aims to efficiently and smoothly guide beginners into the game.

The Beginner Box includes the following contents:

  • 10 Jumpstart-style boosters
  • 2 Reference cards
  • 1 Reference guide booklet
  • 2 “How to Play” guides
  • 2 Gameboard playmats
  • 2 Spindown life counters

The Beginner Box packs do not have the randomized element of Foundations Jumpstart Boosters, as they have been intentionally chosen for this product. These packs include cards from the regular Foundations set, rather than its Jumpstart version.

So far, there is no confirmation that the Value Boosters introduced in Bloomburrow will be available in MTG Foundations.

MTG Foundations formats

Foundations of Magic: The Gathering will be a set that is legal for Standard play. It is designed to serve as the core of MTG’s Standard gameplay for the foreseeable future, providing an easy entry point into the game’s oldest format by remaining Standard-legal until at least 2029.

Although the majority of Foundations’ cards are designed for Standard play, there is a select number of cards that have been specifically developed for Commander. These cards will not be legal for use in the Standard format.

Wizards has likely separated these Commander cards from the rest of MTG Foundations in order to prevent the same issues that have arisen in the past with Modern Horizons sets, where cards intended for other formats have been heavily influenced by Commander.

By keeping these Commander cards separate from the rest of MTG Foundations, Wizards is aiming to prevent potential issues caused by Commander cards altering the balance of other formats, as seen with previous Modern Horizons sets.

Furthermore, the Commander, Legacy, and Vintage formats will all allow for the use of MTG Foundations’ Jumpstart cards and Special Guests.
