MTG Lead Designer Discusses Possible Return of Bloomburrow as Second Set

The Lead Designer of Magic: The Gathering is already planning the potential return to the Bloomburrow plane, even before the first set has been released.

The animal-only fantasy plane of Bloomburrow has generated an impressive amount of early buzz, garnering excitement from both new players and long-time fans alike.

Exciting news for players who were worried that Bloomburrow would only be a temporary plane – MTG’s Lead Designer Mark Rosewater has recently revealed potential alterations that fans can expect if they were to revisit this dynamic world.

The Lead Designer of Rosewater’s blog posted a poll, inquiring about the preferences of fans for a potential revisit to the plane. The options included entirely new animal factions, all of the current archetypes, or a combination of both.

The poll received significant participation from players, receiving a total of 1795 votes when it ended. The final results showed a strong preference for a combination of old and new content, suggesting that Bloomburrow has a solid foundation and potential for growth in future stories and card designs.

Despite interacting with fans, Roseater remains hopeful about Bloomburrow’s potential for receiving future sets. He has already made a prediction that it will rank towards the lower end of the Rabiah Scale, his personal scale for determining the likelihood of a plane’s return, even though the set has not yet been released.

Ever since its release, the reception for the Magic: The Gathering set, Outlaws of Thunder Junction, has been overwhelmingly positive. While it did see success, some fans were disappointed with its tone and felt that the Wild West theme overshadowed the intended focus on the villain team-up at the core of the set.

Magic has seen mixed results with its genre experiments, as Murders at Karlov Manor did not perform well while Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty was adored by the majority of the fanbase.

Regardless of individual opinions on MTG’s exploration of different storylines, Bloomburrow serves as evidence that players are eager to revisit traditional Fantasy elements. It is hoped that this plane will remain a popular destination for players in Magic’s future as it evolves and introduces new worlds.
