The newest leaks for MTG Modern Horizons 3 reveal Six, a legendary living tree that bestows Retrace upon nonland permanents, making it one of the most formidable abilities seen in the set thus far.
Although Magic’s Modern Horizons 3 set has experienced a few leaks before the official spoiler season by Wizards, there is still no official confirmation that Six will be included in the set. We will continue to monitor the accuracy of these leaks as the release of Modern Horizons 3 draws near.
Some fans of MTG may recognize Six as the former companion and host of Wrenn, the Dryad Planeswalker. Wrenn’s survival relies on her bond with trees, making this the first instance where players have witnessed Six without Wrenn by her side.
Six is a valuable asset in battles, with 2/4 stats and Reach to defend against pesky flying creatures. It can also be utilized offensively, as its controller has the ability to mill 3 cards and retrieve a land from the milled cards to add to their hand whenever the Creature attacks.
Six’s true power lies in its Retrace ability. With Six on the battlefield, its controller has the ability to pay the mana cost and discard a land card to recast any nonland permanents from their graveyard.
Despite Magic’s range of abilities that enable spells to be cast from the graveyard, they typically have a one-time use. Unlike these abilities, Retrace does not exile spells after they are cast, allowing them to be cast as many times as their cost can be paid.
Reddit’s MTG community wasted no time in acknowledging the potential strength of Six’s Retrace ability. As pointed out by Commenter RealityPalace in a post on the forum: “The last ability is quite impactful, to say the least.”
At the time, Six was already being utilized in various combos by other players. One such example was highlighted by Reddit user Prid3, who responded to RealityPalace’s post by stating, “It’s going to be quite enjoyable with Life from the Loam, huh?”
Despite the requirement of having lands in hand to discard, Retrace’s only drawback, it is commonly included in decks and archetypes that have recursion abilities such as Landfall. This enables players to repeatedly cast their most powerful spells. Additionally, Six’s attack trigger serves as a source of fuel for Retrace, allowing for a stockpile of lands to be discarded.
In spellslinger decks, Retrace is frequently utilized to retrieve Instants and Sorceries. However, Six’s Retrace has been limited to nonland permanents. Despite this constraint, the ability to retrieve Artifacts, Creatures, and Enchantments remains highly advantageous, making it nearly impossible for opponents to defeat this ever-regenerating force.
